Bill's published liner notes about Kathryn, "Kathryn has a perfect jazz vibrato, and that's unusual.  Her pitch is true, and her interpretations of both melody and lyrics are from the gut of this lovely creature who's in touch with life.  Her current CD is an amazing selection of songs, and frankly, it belongs in every music lover's collection.  Easily available through music stores and her web site

"By the way, in addition to her professional singing career, Kathryn is an endurance swimmer, and has raised many dollars for charity swimming events."

Kathryn recently wrote about Bill, "Bill, a published author, radio and tv personality, Realtor-businessman and musician, was my mentor at the beginning, helping secure my first professional gig in 1966 at the Lookout Room in Galveston's exotic Flagship Hotel on the Pier.

"He is a man of many talents, with a vitae in music (among other things) that found him playing some of the most famous 5-star dining rooms thoughout the USA. He now lives in Dallas, and performs his piano wizardry only on a part-time basis, but his influence is still very much felt nationwide."

You both have impressive bios. It's nice to get to know the person behind the real estate agent. I played piano in my high school and college jazz ensembles. This post is encouraging me to revisit my love for music. Thanks for sharing!

Bill, you are a true Renaissance Man!  Thanks for sharing your music skills -- how about a musical clip?  The real estate attorney with whom I practiced for several years is also an accomplished actor (appeared on TV's Homicide, and on other TV shows and movies) and was a lounge singer in D.C. back in the late 60s.

John, Brian, Todd and Danielle,

This was nothing more than a cheap trick to come up with a blog when I was having writer's block last evening.  Please don't assign any credit to my piano talent.  It's undeserved.  It really is, even though I can still hold my own.

I dearly love Kathryn...loved her mom and dad...love her two sisters.  Yesterday I was thinking about them.  That's how all of this started.  And I wanted to put Kathryn's music out there one more time for all to read about.

Kathryn has an enormous amount of talent.  You really should buy her CD.  Her singing is substantially better than any of the female singers on the pop-jazz standards' circuit, including Diana Krall.  I mean it really is.  And the fellows backing her are fabulous musicians.

While I continue to keep my membership current in the musicians' union, that life is entirely too hard and ominous for me to ever even begin to consider returning to it.  The kindness of the real estate profession has allowed me the privilege of not having to.

By the way, that photo of me up there was taken in a recording studio where I was recording some tunes for a voice-over I was doing.  That's a big Yamaha grand, and only the keyboard and music desk are exposed in the room.  The remainder of the piano sits inside a chamber where it is "miked" from all sides as well as the top and bottom.  That's the correct way to record the piano.

Across the room, the drummer sits and performs in a plate glass room.

And this is the great trumpeter and audio engineer, Byron Parks, recording my playing.

Bill...It never ceases to amaze me the backgrounds of people who somehow end up in the Real Estate Business. I have noticed one common thread....many of them were previously in professions that attract "artistic" people!

Bill, this is a beautiful way to present Kathryn and yourself and your many talents which brought you together all those years ago.
I'll look into buying her cd as I love jazz and have many Diana Krall cds that I listen to now (as well as Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Ella of course and others).  The two of you are both exemplary people and I can clearly see why you remain connected after all these years.

Miss Joan and Miss Jo-

For goodness sakes please don't be the least bit impressed by any of what I've done.  It's all an accident.  God gave me certain talents and a lot of curiosity, and I have spent my life employing both to see where they would take me.  None of it, though, has required much if any work on my part.  So I didn't earn it.

Kathryn, on the other hand, has spent many hours learning how to be the best.  She definitely deserves to win.

And, Miss Joan, you're right about the vast amount of artistic talent that seems to be a part of Realtors, one and all.  You can see the literary talents right here on Active Rain, beginning with you and Jo-Anne.

Bill, I'm impressed. An economist who plays jazz piano. OMG! Did you ever play with Miss Peggy Lee?

I can just imagine it.

Bill, please don't be impressed with my admission that I play jazz piano.  Promise it's not worthy.

I've heard Peggy Lee's show any number of times.  My only claim to fame was accompanying a former Stan Kenton singer, Anita O'Day, in the show room at the St. Louis Chase-Park Plaza Hotel.  Actually I filled in for her group's piano player who was so drunk he couldn't even crawl onto the stage...and he actually tried.

I was playing in the restaurant across they hall.  They came and told me that they and I had no choice...I had to play her show.  Fortunately I knew all of the tunes, and I had heard her arrangements so I was able to fake it pretty well.  That was a very long time ago.
