OK, so what do I know about volunteering? Well, I do know that volunteering is not a mandatory thing, it is a giving of one self in service to a cause greater than oneself.Extreme Makeover Home Edition Anna Mantica c

We all volunteer in one way or another.

Well, I got the opportunity to volunteer on a project to build a home for a family that was up against it recently. I didn't work on building the house, I helped the actual builder in his office so his staff would be free to do what they do best. Extreme Makeover, Home Edition, came to New Hampshire and a lot of people got to help one family rebuild their home.

I am told there was a record turnout for this project. Volunteers from all over New England came to help this family. At first I thought it was because of the TV show but soon found out otherwise. Once you get elbow to elbow with a group of people with one purpose the show becomes secondary.

crowd at home makeover Anna Mantica c

There was a camaraderie and sense of purpose among the volunteers on-site and off. Volunteering is a way to connect with people you may never have the opportunity to meet otherwise.

Helping someone else has rewards difficult to measure. There is the immediate gratification one feels when actually giving their time then there is the sense of accomplishment upon completion. But the effects don't end there.

Suddenly, in a slow market, this week we have more appointments than we've had in months. So much so that business threatens to invade time we have set aside to volunteer. I believe this is the direct result of giving and receiving, sowing and reaping, karma or whatever you choose to call it.

My better half and I are members of a vocal ensemble "Vox Jubilante" and we have been asked to sing Saturday at a celebration to welcome home soldiers from Iraq. We feel so honored to go to this celebration much less entertain men and women who volunteered to put their lives on the line for our precious freedoms and for a people they didn't even know.

You see how it works.....we volunteer to help others who volunteered and so on.

A special Thank You to Anna Mantica for providing these images of the project.

Good Morning Mike & Judy! You can never go wrong when you give. It always comes back to you in a greater measure than what you gave! Good for you!

What an honor to be able to sing for our returning soldiers! Wow!

Linda - We are so looking forward to tomorrow and this event. Our accompaniest has been asked to sing the National Anthem for the event also. Thanks for your comments.

Neal - Thank you for your comments. I think I am getting hooked on two things at once - AR and volunteering.

You did a lot by allowing the builders' time to be freed. I'm sure many people are quite appreciative.

Danielle - Thanks for stopping by. Yes the builders people were very appreciative of our help - 23 agents from our company gave time to cover their phones for the week. They knew their customers and clients were in good hands so they could put their minds, hearts and bodies into the work they needed to get done.

It does seem like there has been a surge in activity recently. I could have several additional closings for the year.

I heard it was a zoo inside the house as workers were coming and going like crazy. I heard 4 people were working on the staircase bannister and there was 6 people walking and running up and down the stairs constantly all the time they were there. Our friends son worked on the inside and he said it was unbelievable in there.

Glad to hear you took part in it as it must have been very rewarding.

Jay - I can't speak to the interior of the house as I volunteered off site at the builders office. I did however go to the site to view the exterior and there were volunteers working like bees and as many if not more spectators gazing. "Imagine" if all the spectators would volunteer 4 hours of their time what could be accomplished. Reminds me of that song by John Lennon. We can have a better world if we could just help our fellow man and allow others to "Lean on Me" remember that song?

Thanks for your input.

That is a great reminder Judy!  I've been refereeing hockey for years, and it tends to yield some sort of business each year.  It is not truly volunteering, but I know I could get paid better doing something else.

Dan - Isn't it great to do something you love even if it doesn't pay great? I know we are looking so forward to singing for those vets and we will not be compensated in dollars but if it heals one heart or gives hope to someone who thinks there is nothing left for them. It is worth more to me than anything.

Linda - Thanks for your enthusiasm. I think this medium AR helps me think of things to say that might go unheard otherwise.

Karl - I don't know how great it would be - they have 3 -4 projects going at one time and fly from one to the other filming. It must be draining but you're right it is probably a lot of fun too.

Gregory - Brittney who????

There are also lots of volunteer opportunities at your local, state, and national associations of Realtors.

Most of the work in all our Realtor associations is done by member/volunteers.

Volunteering and being elected to leadership positions also give you an opportunity to carry out or change policy.

That sounds wonderful.  One of the agents in our office always says, you get by giving...so when she wants to sell more ...she gives more.

I believe that you are opening yourself up to all the good things that are waiting for you.

Making time to make a difference is very admirable.  We all get so busy and caught up with our own lives, we forgot about those in need.  Awesome post.

Brent - Thanks so much for your comments. Time does have a a way of slipping past us and we tend to forget so I am making it a point to schedule volunteer time and make it priority. I have an event today that is volunteer and I had an opportunity to get customers after I'd committed and I referred them out rather than cancelling. It was a hard choice but we only go around one time in this life so we might as well make it count.

Likely in most eveyone's life we can all find some time to volunteer each month - even if it's for only a little while.

Monika - You are welcome and you are right I am turning into a blog-a-holic. I will check out Jay's new post.

Bob & Caroline - Thanks for stopping by. I agree that we can all find a little time in our schedules to volunteer. I get more out of it than I feel I give because the receipients always are grateful no matter how little the task or small the amount of time.
