I know that often the times slips away and we just don't get things done in a timely mannner. Planting bulbs in the fall is an awesome way to cause your home to really catch the eye of the neighborhood. This is sometimes the best time to find the bulbs on sale. If you cannot find the bulbs in the stores then try the Holland Bulb site. They usually have bulk bulbs on sale this time of year.
Daffodils and tulips are my favorite because of the bright colors and the long blooming time these provide in tandem. Daffodils planted with the tulips will help prevent the gophers, and moles from eating the tulips. Those pesky little diggers that eat tulips are repelled by the daffodils. I have no idea why but experience has taught me to intermingle the planting of the daffocils and tulips.
Steps to planting your bulbs in rows.
1. I have found the best way to intermingle the planting is to dig a trench that is about a foot deep and a foot wide
.
2. Place three rows of bulbs in the trench with the bulbs about four inches apart. Place the daffodils in the middle row and also put few amongst the tulips in each of the other rows. The smell of the daffodils must be enough to repel the rodents because they leave the tulips alone.
3. Place enough soil on the bulbs to that they are barely covered.
4. Sprinkle a cup of organic fertilizer containing two parts bone meat and one part blood meal about every five square feet of the trench.
5. Now use the remainder of the dug trench soil to cover the bulbs.
