I've been blogging a lot about our trip to Eureka and what a wonderful time we had. We have a new place to explore and we are very taken with the area. We've always lived near the coast and spent many days and weekends exploring the California Coast. We are headed back for Thanksgiving when we will have more time to have fun.
We visited the The Redwoods along the Coast near Trinidad. We drove to the top and enjoyed the silence of the deep forest. As we turned onto the road, I notice a huge paved lot and said to David...."Wow...what was that"? On the way back down we stopped to look at it and realized that it was an old lumber "processing yard". It had been the staging point for the trucks coming and going, bringing down the trees being cut. It was so massive that it made me feel ill. To think of that many trees being cut down from the "Old Growth Redwoods".
I remember twenty years ago when David and I got married (well...21 now), he did not want to use redwood when we had to replace our deck. He's from the Northwest (Spokane, WA). I didn't understand really why he felt this way. I'm glad my partner was an aware person....and therefore shed light on the subject.
This place was so huge that I cannot even describe the size. No photo would ever convey how large it was. I have to say that while we had a wonderful time, I felt the heaviness of these Ancient trees having been cut down. There are only 5% of the Ancient Old Growth Redwoods left. 4% in National Parks and 1% owned by private parties.
Ancient Being - Jeanean Gendron
The forest is so beautiful and silent. People just stand and look up in awe. You know you are in the presence of some ancient beings that give shelter to so much abundant life.
Deep Redwood Forest - Jeanean Gendron
Standing so tall and so green, one is left with a sadness that the "Works of Man" can take such a heavy toll on our beautiful planet and these magnificent and ancient beings.
Lumber Ghosts - Jeanean Gendron
On Samoa Island, we came upon this site and we were spell bound. Sitting in the mist were rows upon rows of long forgotten redwood lumber stacked high. We would be but a speck standing next to them. All our beautiful and ancients friends lie here in slumbered sleep giving testimony to a history of Man making wrong choices. It is something to ponder and to learn from.
