It's Just a Bizzaro World - Middle School Student Suspended for Hugging!

It happened in Brevard County, Florida.  The scene of the crime was Southwest Middle School. The principal was witness to the crime, and he took the culprit to the Dean who meted out the punishment.

The juvenile delinquent claimed ignorance of the law.  "Honestly", he said, "I didn't know, because I didn't think hugging was a bad thing.  I didn't know you could get suspended for it."  I mean, really, ignorance of the law is just no excuse.  This young man had the gaul to HUG a fellow student in the hallway!  OMG!

The public information officer for the Brevard County School system said "we can not make an opinion on whether a hug is appropriate or not.  It's a very difficult thing to police on campus.  The school puts policies and procedures in place to help keep the students focused on learning".  You go girl!  I'm sleeping better tonight with  YOU on the job!

An innocent hug.  To the adults in Brevard County, I say "leave them alone".  Judgment calls like this are turning my America into something I just don't recognize anymore.

Zero tolerance rules are idiocy. Trying to make everyone exactly the same never works.

This is really stupid.  They should find something more productive to do with their time than disciplining kids who are hugging.  Ridiculous!

I've read the news articles and the only thing I can think of is that school was probably sued for sexual harrassment in the past and therefore put this policy in place.

The public information officer is wrong on two counts.  It is not the role of the system to figure out if the hug is appropriate or not.  There has to be a victim of some crime to determine that.  Secondly, the school is not creating a learning environment when you have the equivalent of jack booted thugs running the school.  "Do it our way, or the highway!"

I don't have a problem with this.  Schools have rules for a reason.  The parents and students typically sign off on a code of conduct when they attend.  What you say is an innocent hug might end up being 2 students having sex in a closet.  Suspension might be too much of a punishment but better to discipline students to keep them in line than have the anarchy that you see in so many public schools.
