Cruise Classic NCAA basketball
(North Carolina vs. Michigan State),
a new ship christening, and America's Cup,
all in San Diego through November 20

Beginning Friday, November 11, and running through November 20, San Diego will be hosting three unique events.

USS Carl VinsonThe first is the the NCAA basketball game between the North Carolina Tar Hells, national champions in 2009, the third-winningest basketball program of all time, and currently ranked #1 in the nation; and the Michigan State Spartans, the 2000 national champions.

You might say, "So what?" Well, this game will be played on the flight deck of the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. The USS Vinson is the ship that oversaw the burial at sea of Osama bin Laden.

The Carrier Classic is the first game of its kind, and President Obama will be in attendance. There were 7,000 tickets available, but none for the public. All active duty military.

Then, Saturday, November 12, Myrlie Evers-Williams, the widow of slain civil-rights leader Medgar Evers, will be in San Diego at the General Dynamics NASSCO ship building dock to christen the 689-foot dry cargo ship that will bear her former husband's name. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. and is open to the public.

America's Cup class sailboatStarting on Saturday and continuing through November 20 on San Diego Bay, San Diego will be the first U.S. city to host an event in the new America's Cup World Series leading up to the 2013 America's Cup which will be held in San Francisco. An international feet of 45-foot catamarans will be racing around the waters of San Diego Bay. Should provide for some great pictures!

Jim,  You had me at "New Ship Christening".  Boy do I have a hankering for visiting the ocean right now - preferably the Pacific Ocean.  Sounds like lots of fun in your neck of the woods - or should I say your patch of sand.

Jim, Those sound like some great activities, even if the general public isn't invited, that basketball game sounds like a great game and what a setting for it!  I will be honest, I didn't know that the America's Cup races were still going on!  And the ship christening with Mrs. Evers should really be a cool event!
