Do Women Who Work in the Real Estate Industry Face a Glass Ceiling?

There's a rumor that the National Association of Realtors is taking a long look at this issue.  The issue was discussed in some detail on Friday afternoon, at the NAR Equal Opportunity - Cultural Diversity Committee meeting.

According to more than one source, NAR is looking into claims that women in real estate do not have the same leadership opportunities as men do.  It has been suggested that women face resistance in leadership roles within the industry.  In the eyes of some observers, positions such as NAR President and other top leadership roles appear to be more often dominated by men.

The discussion at the National Association of Realtors Equal Opportunity - Cultural Diversity Committee meeting this past week was a lively one.  Commenters pointed out that candidates for NAR President begin their campaigns many years in advance.  Such campaigns are increasingly expensive and are often assembled by large public relations firms.

There were examples of those campaigns on display in the foyer and hallways of the Anaheim Convention Center Mariott Hotel last week.  One such conspicuously displayed ad was for the 2016 NAR President position.  The ad depicts one of the candidates charging towards the camera in a quarterback-style stance, looking something like a life-sized athlete (sporting a crewcut and wearing a suit & tie) on a cereal box.  A member of the Equal Op Committee commented wryly that the message is supposed to communicate, "I'm dynamic and energetic, vote for me!"

Expect to hear more debate about the subject of equal opportunity for women in the Realtor leadership community at the upcoming NAR Midyear Legislative Meetings in the spring of 2012.

Very interesting topic, Eric - I've not experienced any constraints in real estate, but will be watching this post to see comments by others!

Hi Eric,

Interesting your committe took up this question.

From my experience, no I really don't think there is a glass ceiling in r.e. especially today. However as a young REALTOR decades ago one aspect that interested me as much as anything else about r.e. was what I considered as equal opportunity.

Later as a broker/owner I knew I was in the minority (and still am to a degree according to NAR stats) but I think it's more up to the individual than the gender.

Btw, I'm heading back over to Anaheim tomorrow to get through the trade show with a few of the agents in my office.

An interesting question.  I retired as a professional teacher in 2007.  At that time women had made huge gains in the education world but in the mid 1970s there were really some big equality issues.

In the real estate world it seems to me woman are more successful than men.  Maybe that is just my experience.  I would be interested in seeing production statistics for the genders.

Karen - It seems like the focus of the question was about a "glass ceiling" in the leadership area of real estate.  Most NAR Presidents have been male.  And the suggestion was made that the problem seems to begin on the state level.

Corinne, in some ways I suppose that is true.  And there is a perception that the real estate industry is a "good old boys" network.

Lynda - I heard that Ron Phipps specifically requested that we discuss the issue.

The Expo is lots of fun.  I wish I'd had more time to explore the trade show this past week.

Kathy, I'll have to find out if the debate was recorded.  I'll let you know if there's some way to get a recording of our EOC session.

Paul - There are certainly statistics that women are a major force in the industry.  But in the area of association leadership, I'm hearing that Ron Phipps believes there could be improvement in opportunities for women.
