I think that Fuquay Varina is a great setting for this event; after all, our town's namesake is derived from a love story! "During the Civil War, girls wrote to soldiers to support them - even ones they didn't know. Virginia Avery used the pen name "Varina" to write to a young gentleman from Fuquay, J.D. Ballentine. When he returned home from the war, he found Varina and married her. She was the love of his life and he named several businesses after her. The area became known as Varina." Later in 1964 the town officially became Fuquay-Varina.
