Do you have a “gentrify” in your area?

Truly I do not remember coming across this term in my training.  In fact I just looked at my booklet and it’s not in there.  This would have a beneficial effect to some and a displacement to others.  Hence the age old political correctness of which one do you do.  The meaning of (jen’tri fi’) is to convert (a deteriorated or aging area in a city) into a more affluent middle-class neighborhood resulting in increased property values and in displacement of the poor.  Now what say you?

James, we have so much land here in Jacksonville that this is inevitable at some point....attempts have been made to re-energize our urban core over the years, and it just has not quite taken hold yet...

Unless the "poor" can be elevated in their situation via education, employment and opportunities, this is often a subtle way to displace them so that they are not seen.

TRUE gentrification encompasses the current and future residents of the area

An excellent example, based on my midwestern roots, are several neighborhoods in Chicago. Enjoy your day!

James: In the greater Philadelphia area, we call it gentrification. Society Hill is possibly the most famous gentrified neighborhood in Philadelphia. A former dock area, it was transformed in the 1960's and 1970's from a part of the city with old housing stock, warehouse and port activity to an attractive, upscale community. High rise luxury rentals, hotels, restaurants, grants/ low interest financing to refurbish colonial era homes and new construction built to "fit in" to the historic nature of the neighborhood contributed to the neighborhood renaissance.  Gentrification transforms neighborhoods but also displaces those who can't afford to rehab, or even to pay the rising real estate taxes.

In Philadelphia, Society Hill was conceived and inspired and brought to fruition with the help and vision of Edmund Bacon, Philadelphia's premier city planner of that era and father of actor Kevin Bacon.

Have a great day!

Hi James,

Fort Worth has them! You just reminded me that I need to check out some condos - I've been meaning to do that. There were some run down office high rises that were renovated to some upscale condos that are apparently very, very nice. All people deserve to be treated fairly!
