Fire the Board of Trustees!

Fire the Board of Trustees!  The scandal at Penn State University is another example of those in charge failing to protect the least among us.  When we become more concerned with protecting one man's legacy  or the football program's legacy and we forget our responsibilities to ensure the proper, legal and moral conduct of those in our employ, we have failed in our responsibilities.

It is sad that Joe Paterno will finish a distinguished coaching career on such a disgraceful note. However, I believe strongly that Coach Paterno, in his affection and friendship for Assistant Coach Sandusky forgot his responsibility to represent his employer and his conscience.

Eventually, we may learn how many children were abused by this Assistant Coach. We will never know how severely they were traumatized and how badly their lives were'are affected by the crime and more importantly here by the cover-up.

Fire the Board of Trustees! If the University has insufficient guidelines in place for handling these types of events, The Board of Trustees should be held accountable. If the University does have guidelines in place, but the oversight is weak, again the Board of Trustees should be held accountable.

There will be an exhaustive investigation, to be sure. Every employee who had even the slightest knowledge of this criminal behavior should be held accountable - in whatever means is necessary. Losing jobs, losing pensions, possible criminal charges should all be on the table.

We need to get past the days of looking the other way. The Catholic Church and other large institutions have been vilified (deservedly so) for turning a blind eye, allowing countless children to be hurt.

I believe the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania should call for the resignations of the Board of Trustees at Penn State immediately. Further, the Governor should appoint an interim Board and demand that they cooperate fully with the investigation and implement new policies and safeguards to prevent this gross neglect in the future.

Coaches, educators, clergy, et al enjoy a sacred trust - one that we as a society cannot allow to be broken. We must hold all adults who work with, care for children to the highest of standards.

Anne ......No one could have said it better than you just did!  All my thoughts on the matter are summed up in your post .....Thanks and I hope they do the right thing!  No one knows the devastating effect it has on those kids!  Some will overcome through faith and prayer, but some will never overcome what happened!

Great post!

Hi Anne,

I have watched the scandal with an inquiring mind and an open one. But as more and more information comes forward we need to ask "why more was not done".

The board of Trustees, What an "oxy moron" Trustees. I say they All should be fired. I think they should clean house for not reporting what they knew when they knew it.

Simple as that.

All the best, Clint McKie

Well said, Anne.  This situation is haunting me.  I have two young boys and the things I have read give me nightmares.  What is wrong with these people that they just carried on, worrying only about their career ambitions and football record while innocent children were being raped under the guise of a charity trying to help them.  It's absolutely sickening.

I have not heard that the trustees were even aware of the facts which occurred. In this case, they finally acted responsibly by firing Paterno and Spanier. It is amazing that these folks did not understand the law. I am amazed that no one more directly involved did not act to go beyond the chain of command when nothing occurred. As a former clergy person, I knew my responsibilities if I learned of child abuse. I agree with what has occurred so far (firing Paterno and president), but cannot support your desire to fire the Board of Trustees. Have a great day.

Anne - I agree with you & Rob; this is absolutely disgusting, and even if they think certain individuals did nothing wrong, per se, everyone around the situation knew something was not right.

Anyone, EVERYONE, who knew of this abuse of children should be prosecuted.

They had a choice, either protect the child or children or protect the child abuser/pedophile/sexual predator.

Once the first witness reported that incident, the rape of a 10 year old, anyone who knew of the crimes committed and didn't report them to the law became an enabler and an accomplice of each and every subsequent occurrance of sexual assault and abuse of the children.

They made their choices and they should be held responsible for the CONSCIOUS DECISIONS they made.

The question now remains, how tight will the university and the law CIRCLE THE WAGONS around the perp and their powerful enablers.

I am so glad of Perterno's firing. I lost a lot of respect for ESPN commentators who felt he should continue until the end of the season and would not put hiding what he knew in its proper perspective. You can kind of understand the students standing behind Joe as they don't have kids and don't know how it fells to love someone more than themselves. Hopefully everyone that knew will be held responsible not simply by being fired.

Good morning Anne. You have made a powerful argument for accountability and conscience. Let's hope that all responsible for this horrible thing have to pay in a real way.

It is such a shame that so many of these institutions of supposed higher learning are so focused on the $$$$ and ignoring honor and integrity, and are either complicit or turning a blind eye to infractions and in this case egregious behavior,

USC, UM, FSU, and now Happy Valley, Penn State...The list just keeps on growning.  How sad that honorable competitive play against competeing schools has devolved into just another multi-billion dollar business.

Mykael: We will probably never know who knew what and when. It's not like this is something new - there has been so much in the news on this topic in recent years.

Sheila: Accountability seems to be in short supply in every facet of our society.

Steve: The students are just kids who do not understand all of the ramifications of these issues. I agree the comments on the sports shows yesterday were rediculous.  The protection of children comes before money, greed, legacies, football programs etc.

Lenn: It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. I am not holding out a lot of hope.

Carol: Those at the top are responsible to set the tone and make sure all employees feel empowered to report questionable and of course criminal behavior.  They do not get a free pass.

Kathy: Thank you for the supportive comments.

Cal: I agree that we are not aware of what the trustuees knew and when they knew it. However, every person at a school should be/is a mandated reporter. My current problem with the Board of Trustees is that apparently they have not established a workable reporting system. In employees were not empowered to report what was seen, I think the culpability goes staight to the top.  The protection of children comes before anything else.

Coral: I think people get caught up in their sense of importance. I also think there is still an incredible amount of ignorance on this type of abuse. As in other institutions, I believe certain people, including JoePa, allowed their affection and friendship with the coach affect their behavior. Bad judgment then should be a cause for dismissal.

Clint: Until many more people feel the way you do, crises of abuse will continue.

Rob: Joe Paterno's comment the other night that we should all say a prayer for the victims just showed how out of touch he truly is. While prayer is certainly in order, these children/young adults are going to need counselling, support, etc. It may take a long time for these kids to heal, if ever.

Anne ~ I agree wholeheartedly with you! Allowing that "coach" to finish out the season was absurd! 20 years of allowing this to go on, lock them all up.
