Repair Weather Stripping to Prevent Drafts...
It's been cool... but now that it's starting to get cold, you might begin noticing more drafts around your windows, and weather stripping may be to blame. Over time, it can become loose, break away or bend. If you can't just refasten it, you'll need to replace it altogether.
For double-hung windows, install spring-style weather stripping. Cut the stripping two inches longer than the height of the sash. Open the sash, slide the stripping into the channel, and secure it with nails. Trim the stripping to fit around pulleys and balances, and then pry it open with a putty knife. Follow the same process along the top of the window frame. At the bottom, nail the stripping to the window sash.
For wood casement, hinged or sliding windows, use pliable-gasket weather stripping with a self-adhesive backing. Cut it to fit, and install it so the sash presses lightly against it. If your windows are slightly warped, use compressible felt strips.
