The 5th Annual Lower Makefield Veterans Day Parade takes place Sunday, November 13 at 1:00 PM. The parade begins at the intersection of Edgewood Road and Long Acre Lane and proceeds southward on Edgewood Road to Veterans Square Park at the corner of Edgewood and Heacock Roads.
The parade features veterans from various conflicts, the Pennsbury High School Marching Band, local dignitaries, boy and girl scout troops, firetrucks, and much more. Decorated World War II veteran Leon Nowalinski is Parade Marshal. Refreshments will be available at the end of the parade at Veterans Square Park, and the Pennsbury Marching Band will play at the park until the parade is complete.
Immediately following the parade, the public is invited to stay for a wreath-laying and ground-breaking ceremony for the Veterans Square Monument. All veterans are invited to place a shovel in the ground. Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick and State Rep. Steve Santarsiero will participate in the ceremony.
The Lower Makefield Veterans Committee is a volunteer group comprised of residents and veterans formed several years ago to create a lasting monument to the Township's veterans. The committee's mission is "to create a timeless monument to honor veterans of the past, present and future within a peaceful park setting where residents can gather with family, friends, and neighbors for public events, or to enjoy the park and monument on their own." The LMT Veterans Committee hopes to create a destination for rest and reflection and also to educate the children in the community about the many and sustained sacrifices made by our servicemen and servicewomen.
The Veterans Committee has held a number of fundraisers over the past few years to create a permanent monument in Veterans Square Park. An Engraving Campaign where residents and businesses have the opportunity to purchase a brick or granite paver and be a part of the monument is ongoing.
