Book GraphicI've been reading a number of articles and websites lately about goal setting, how to go about it and what goals should entail.  I must profess, I have never been one to do written goals.  I just, apparently, go along and do my job and live my life, and things usually work out - each year is usually better than the one before.

For 2007, I'm going to TRY to be better at setting goals, and having them mean something other than just words on a piece of paper that I misplace or throw away.  I'm going to try to make S-M-A-R-T goals, those should be perhaps more realistic instead of pie-in-the-sky goals:

                             S -  Specific
                             M - Measurable
                             A - Attainable
                             R - Relevant
                             T - Time-bound

Writing goals is supposed to help you think ABOUT your goals much more carefully and thoroughly.  In all the reading I've been doing, I came up with this short outline that might be of help to others as well:

~~ Where do I want to be FINANCIALLY?
       (earnings, savings, investments, etc.)
in 3 months?   in 6 months?   in 1 year?   in 3 years?

~~ Where do I want to be PERSONALLY?
(education, career, self-improvement, life changes, etc.)
in 3 months?   in 6 months?   in 1 year?   in 3 years?

~~ Where do I want to be SOCIALLY?
(family, friends, marriage, kids, friends, signficant others, etc.)
in 3 months?   in 6 months?   in 1 year?   in 3 years?

I've read some very good articles on "Personal Goal Setting - Setting and Achieving Life Goals"  - finding your own direction and living your life YOUR way, and not how others want you to live it.  I admire people I see living their lives THEIR way, and not always necessarily confining themselves to society's norms.  And it's not that I don't live my life the way I want, but I know sometimes my life can be so much more........

I want to learn to make my goals SMART, I want to learn to write them down and I want to learn to make themreaching toward the sky mean something.  They need to mean something to me in order for me to pay any attention to them.  I took a course one time, long ago, and I remember writing things down then that meant something in the class to appease those in the class, but they didn't mean anything to me.  And I'm the one who counts now.

I have achieved and attained things at this point, that long ago, I never dared dream about.  But I'm certain there's more to be attained.  And to that end, here's a website that talks about writing powerful written goals in 7 easy steps.

I've read some of the great posts by Skip Weisman here on Active Rain, and he's got some great information he's sharing with us.  His post, "Did You Achieve Your Goals in 2006?" got me to thinking about goals and that I really should do some serious thinking about them.  And he has some other really great reading there as well.

It's time to start putting some of what I've written here into action.  I need to learn to stop procrastinating and just DO IT!!

Another good post Ann!  I've been an avid goal setter and list maker for quite some time.  Over the years I've set some pretty high goals for myself both personally and professionally.  I set smaller more reachable goals on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to reach the larger overall goal.  Work goals tend to come easy for me...it's the personal goals that I'm find more challenging as you have to ask yourself deeper questions like...what makes me tick?  Or what makes me happy?  I tend to get lost in the work goals and forget that I need to take care of myself once in awhile.  Guess there is goal number one for me in 2007!!  Good luck with your SMART goals!!

Yes Ann,

Smart goal setting just makes things/life/business so much easier.

I've been doing written goals from the day I first started teaching (we call them lesson plans <LOL>) to today. I have a simplified format on my computer and now I just fill in the blanks. Easy.

The hard part? Printing them out and FOLLOWING them. Anyone can have goals. Very few actually work on them.

Harvard did a study years ago...found that only 3 out of a 100 people had written goals. Those three, however, surpassed the rest. And, it's easy to see why. It helps you focus and keeps you going when it's hard to motivate yourself.

'06 was good...and '07 will be even better!

Ken ~ thanks for stopping by, and I did go check out your post!  Thanks for inviting me to post my link.

Sue ~ thank you for reading my posts!  I am, and have been, a list-maker in all aspects of my life.  Some might say I live by my lists.  I suppose in a way, those are goals of a sort - never thought about all my lists in that light.  By putting this post in writing, I guess I will now have to hold myself accountable.....that sorta scares me in a way.

Eileen ~ thank you for reading, and for your comments!  I start every day by writing my goals (to-do list) for that day.  I sometimes do it the night before, but on those rare days that I don't start off with a to-do list, I 'wander' through my day aimlessly, and pretty much end up feeling like I didn't get a thing done.  I would like to be one of those '3 out of 100' to write AND WORK goals.

Ann, Elaine Reese doesn't have her post up anymore, but she had a dynamite Business Plan that I saved and used = this was back in September I think.  It was the first time I had ever done a business plan, for any business (Ok, Eileen, I guess I'm wrong I did do lesson plans lol).  It got me motivated to take it further and work on areas in my business that I am weakest in, so that I can improve. I hear you, I am looking for a much better 2007 and I think we will be pleasantly surprised!

Linda - thanks for your comments!

Leslie - I thought the information in the links I included was pretty good.  I read alot more than those, but I thought those did a very good job hitting the important points and in plain English.  For me, that made them easy to follow and therefore more likely to be followed!  ;-)

Carole - thanks for reading, and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who had never done a business plan, a real business plan.  Do you still have a copy of Elaine's business plan?  I'd love to see it, if you do.

Ann,

I have never been one to set goals. At least I never wrote any down. I always just do what needs to be done each day. But you're right and I think I am going to start planning where I want to be and what I want to accomplish for 2007. Thanks for the post.
