Inspired by Melody Fulk's quick guide to QR codes, I tried out the system myself. I have a Droid phone, so I visited the Droid marketplace and downloaded the highest-rated free QR code maker/reader (QR Droid). This program allows you to generate a code and then design its appearance, including size and color. Heretofore, I had never seen a code in anything other than black, but not anymore!
Open the program on your phone, then tap QR CODE to generate a new, unique code. Tap on SIZE to select an appropriate size (smaller for an email contact info block, larger for a web page, huge for a sticker). Tap COLOR to pick the right color. I matched my code's color to the predominant color of my web page: orange. You can tap LOGO to add one, LABEL to label your code, etc. This menu is very intuitive. Finally, tap on EDIT to add your web page address. Of course, you can use codes for lots of other things, but this is the most obvious first place to send people to. Tap SAVE, then tap SHARE. You have a choice of 15 ways to share; I selected g-mail to send a copy of the code to myself as a .jpg file.
When the .jpg arrived, I copied the image to my desktop RE file, then copied it to this blog post:
Now, if you don't already have a QR code reader, download one for your phone (there are literally hundreds that are free and work fine) and scan this code. You should see the URL to my website, and by tapping on that URL, you'll get taken directly to the page.
This whole process, including downloading the program, took about 15 minutes. The next one I do will take half that time. Try it! It's easy, fun, and spectacularly successful.
