"Folklore" or Science……Red Halo Around Full Moon?

www.kristinhamiltonblog.com

Tonight I was outside trying to take some moon photos and much to my surprise the clouds were moving so fast and a red halo surrounded the moon which made it difficult to get clear shots. Later, the halo effect widened. So I researched this for an explanation and here is the Folklore interpretation; “And should the Moon wear a halo of red, a tempest is nigh”. English Translation: A storm is near..

www.kristinhamiltonblog.com

Then I looked up the scientific interpretation and it said “Clouds moving in, cold front off shore, high winds and hailstorm coming”.

Now 5 hours later, we are having a big wind storm and the rain has started. Very interesting how the moon is a great predictor of the weather!

Very interesting! What is your interpretation of this?

Great pics and information from your research on the meaning of the red halo effect around the moon.  I had never thought of the moon being a weather predictor -- how neat.

Hi Joni,

Our news channels are off sometimes too. I guess they had to go with the storm predictions since Alaska just had the largest storm in 50 years hit 3 days ago so it was a given that it was headed this way. Luckily it has lightened up over the journey south. I have always heard about the odd and unusual behavior during a full moon but never sure if this was real or people just acted out as they knew it was a full moon. But this aura is nothing we could control. I studies astronomy in college but have forgotten a lot of it. I was very interesting. What I remember is usually off the crossword puzzles. Have a great weekend.

Hi Robin and Sue,

I never thought of it either. The lunar phases and theories are extremely interesting but not so sure it controls peoples behavior? Have a great weekend.

I have never heard of this either but have to believe its obviously an atmospheric gig that whatever precedes a storm is more visible at night with moonlight and that is why there is the red halo. (just a guess but it makes sense to me)

Curious to know the real reason if you know it

You will have us watching the moon more carefully.  I enjoyed the very bright full moon when I went our for my early morning walk.

Enjoy the season of Thanksgiving and be sure to have your camera in hand to capture those special moments.

Hi David,

I took this straight from Wikipedia: A halo around the sun or moon is caused by the refraction of that body's light by ice crystals at high altitude. Such high-level moisture is a precursor to moisture moving in at increasingly lower levels, and is a good indicator that an active weather system is on its way.

*I am sure it had to do with the Alaskan storm that headed south a couple of days ago.

Hi Kristine, I saw that last night around a full moon as well. I didn't photograph it but the rain hasn't stopped all day here either, :-).

PS, I am sort of hoping for a 400mm lens and a 2x telecoverter for Chrsitmas. Then when I do the moon shot, we can see the man up there, LOL.

My mother use to say, "Red moon at night, sailors delight.  Red moon at morning, sailors warning."  I don't know if it was true or not:-)

Hi Joshua,

Thanks for stopping and yes I was amazed when I was researching it last night. The folklore is very interesting but not scientific but have the same opinions? I think they had figured it out centuries ago that red halo meant storm coming but didn't have the science understanding. Same results!

Hi William,

That halo was very pretty. My pictures were not touched up with Photo Shop either. That was the way they came out. We have had bad weather most of the day but now just wind. I like the rain so I hope it rains some more.

Yes, you will be able to see all the way to the moon. We will be expecting to see the man and the cheese. Funny thing, when I was researching last night, I saw the results of a poll regarding the moon. 13% said the moon was made out of cheese??

Hi Myrl,

I saw all the folklore when I was writing it. "Tempest is nigh" kept coming up and I didn't understand what it meant so I had to look up the words which interpreted to "Storm is Near". OK but the folklore had other interpretations too like something bad coming and something bad just happened. Folklore is very interesting isn't it?  Our moms probably heard all that stuff from their moms.

That's interesting, Kristin, I knew a halo around the moon meant storm coming but I never heard of a red halo. I love the moon shots.

Hi Toni,

They came out nice didn't they. The longer I stood outside, the redder it seemed to get. I think the clouds made it quite interesting also. The theory was correct as we had a storm about 5 hrs later.

Thanks for stopping.

Kristin,

We didn't get any storms but there's a lot to reading sky conditions. :)

Hi Steve,

Luckily this was not the storm of the century even for Alaska. I am not always sure where the weather people come up with their predictions. Maybe they should check out the moon more often!

Thanks for stopping and have a nice day.
