OK...full disclosure...I lived in South Florida in the early 80's and ventured down to Miami for college. On most afternoons I would stop by one of the many hole in the wall (literally...they would be a hole in the wall with a picnic table or two in front) Cuban restaurants that would serve amazing food, Cuban coffee and flan for dessert...all for ridiculously low prices.
Cuban food soon became one of my favorite ethnic foods and remains that way till this day. One of the issues with Cuban food is that for some unknown reason it has not caught on like say Mexican food has. Of course in Miami you can find a restaurant on almost every corner...but as you venture north even in the State of Florida you will have few options. Thankfully in Indialantic, FL we have a new contender...and it is called El Fogon.
El Fogon is located about a block or two east of the Melbourne Causeway (Indian River) on 5th ave in Indialantic. It is a very small restaurant on the south side of the street. The inside of El Fogon is very clean but small with only three tables and a few additional counter spaces. This place is designed to do mostly take-out...but don't let that stop you from coming in...the service both times I have been to El Fogon has been really good.
The owner/cook is from Cuba (that is what the waitress told me) and the food is spot on. If you come for lunch try one of the sandwiches...the Cuban is wonderful. Be prepared to take half of it home because the portion size (for only $6.25) is huge! Try a side order of the sweet plantains...they are just like Mama would have made (if my Mom had been Cuban). For dinner try the Pork Chop with rice and plantians...and if you save a little room try the Flan...it is just so good you will buy your next house from me just for recommending it!
