Speechless Sunday - Memories of Long Ago

By
Real Estate Agent with SHAHAR Management

I was coming from an appointment the other day when I passed a house with this in their front yard as a decorative piece.  I love when people display things like this.  It was out in the middle of a huge front yard and it makes you wonder who owned it when it was brand new and through the years.  This was probably used on a huge farm that is now no longer in existence in either Orange or Sullivan County, New York.  A piece of history that adorns someone's front yard who may or may not have had a family member who used this on a daily basis years ago.

Debra, the photo is great! It actually brings back memories of when I would go visit my grandmother on the farm as a boy. It seems they had a lot of old, old equipment and that equipment kept the farm running. Thanks for sharing.

Deb -- That's pretty cool. I wonder what the history is behind it. It must have a lot of miles on it and stories to tell.

Debra,  It's rare in my area to see such pieces in front yards.  I know homeowners who have similar pieces in their backyard.  My sister has an old cart that would have been pulled by horses.  I'm glad you were inspired to stop and take a photo!

Now that is definitely a piece of Americana. I'll bet that tractor was someone's pride and joy long ago. Now it's a lawn ornament.

Occassionally when I am driving across the countryside, I will come across vintage farm equipment such as the one you have pictured.  They always cause reason for pause, about where we have come from with technology over the years.  Still, I'll bet that old tractor could get the job done just as well today as yesterday.  Which is more than we can say for some of the new stuff which lasts about 10 minutes.

Make me think about Papa's tractor and the cement floor house out back.  I'll have to write about that.

Debra, funny but I was still thinking about this tractor early this morning before getting out of bed. I know I need help....another topic....but it might be a steam engine tractor. I'll have to have David take a look at it....but I think it might be....that would really be interesting to know who it belonged to and how long it was in service....they are a rare find. Have a good day!

David says no....he thinks it is a Oil Pull Tractor:

From the Wiki....

The Rumely Oil Pull was a line of farm tractors developed by Advance-Rumely Company from 1910 to 1930. Most were very large tractors powered by kerosene-burning engines. The engine was designed to burn all kerosene grades at any load.

A popular model, the Type F, had a single cylinder of 10" bore and a 12" stroke. It was started by the operator stepping out of the cab via the large iron rear wheel, climbing onto the flywheel and using his bodyweight to get it turning, then quickly rushing back into the cab to adjust the choke and try to keep the engine running.

You were on a roll with fun post this weekend! Have a great week!
