Welcome to 2012 -- Countdown Begins in Pasadena CA

This past week the countdown to 2012 began in Pasadena, California.  Even if the calendar is early November, the installation of the first grandstands in Pasadena always signals to me the New Year will be here before we know it.    As South Orange Grove Boulevard makes it way north to Colorado Boulevard, the first grandstands were being installed for the annual New Year celebration known as The Rose Parade. .   The parade, more formally known as The Tournament of Roses Parade, is held each New Year's Day except when that day falls on a Sunday so this year's parade will be held on Monday, January 2, 2012

Michael.  This year has flown by for me.  I can't believe the holidays are rapidly approaching and now New Years.  That is exciting to be able to experience the parade every year.  Some traditions are just so great.

Belinda -- so often it seems and we often say that time flies by and I that feels true unless we are waiting for an answer to an offer/counter offer .... then it can seem to re...a......ll.....y   dr.......a.......g.

You are right about traditions and Pasadena is home to many beyond the annual Rose Parade.

Great most Michael, the parade sounds like a blast, reminds me of my childhood when I would go during the holidays.

Does it really take 45 days to put up all those grandstands. I guess that's job creation!

Will -- the Rose Parada and of course, the Rose Bowl Game are traditions in Pasadena and beyond.

Eric -- while there is viewing from streets with people standing(restrictions when the city will allow people to begin camping out), the grandstands typically start appearing in mid-November.

Don -- thanks for stopping by to comment.  I hope all is well in your world.

So interesting to hear about all of the arrangements for the Rose Parade, Michael - I've never thought about how much planning must go into this event!

Michael, watching the Rose Bowl Parade is always one of my favorite things to do. I had no idea that they didn't have it on Sunday though. Is the game moved too?

I will be thinking of you while I watch the parade freezing here in Colorado. I see Pasadena has named a street after my beautiful state of Colorado. We are honored! I will be looking for you in the grandstands wearing your ActiveRain T-Shirt and waving a sign that says: "I am ActiveRain" Are YOU up for the challenge?! :)

Hey Cheryl -- Sorry ---  can't accept your challenge this time ---  there's no chance of seeing me in the grandstands on January 2 --- although what we think of as cold in Pasadena can't compare with the temperatures in Colorado (yes, call me a wimp if you must), I prefer to watch the parade from the comfort of a warm living room in front of my flat screen television.

One year, a bit after midnight, a group of us ventured to the start of the parade route -- South Orange Grove Boulevard is closed to traffic and the floats are lined up and you can catch last minute floral touch-ups.   It was definitely once-in-a-lifetime experience.  Brrrrrrr.

I love the Rose Parade but I've never been even though I grew up in Riverside. San Diego's not that far either.

Jim -- maybe 2012 should be the year -- Monday, January 2, 2012, parade starts early or come stay on the streets of Pasadena in advance.

Michael what a great way to put it. I have went once,we had to be there early:)) we were the guest of one of the designer's it was fun but too cold and too early for me. I guess it is one of those things you have to do once in a lifetime:)

Endre -- many will consider this is a once in a lifetime moment in person.  You can celebrate each year on television.  Of course, in Los Angeles through the benefit of KTLA -- the parade and festivities are shown live without commercial interruption(plus all of the pre-parade activities) and then re-played over(and over) throughout the day....

Michael how true, we always lay around and watch the floats at our leisure with orange juice(left over champagne:))) and comment on the floats:)

Endre -- if you can't get enough of viewing the floats on television and don't want to view it early in the morning along the parade route, you can always go to the post-parade viewing of floats that line up near Victory Park in East Pasadena.   They go on display immediately after the parade ends for a day or so.
