As I was showing houses yesterday everything was going well and my buyers and I were making progress chipping away at the 7 listings they wanted to see. We arrived to our 6th house which was vacant and bank owned and went inside to look around. As I was taking them through the house I saw a car pull up outside and didn’t think much of it assuming it was another agent. The house was all one level, the doorbell rang and I went to answer it while my clients were in the back portion of the house looking at bedrooms. A man by himself was at the door and as soon as I opened it started to walk in, I kindly asked if he was an agent and he said no, I was just driving by and I want to see inside. I stood my ground, all 5’2” of me and explained that he can’t come in without being represented by an agent. Even offered for him to sign a buyer broker agreement and set up an appointment for another day but, after about 5 minutes of repeating all the reasons that I wasn’t letting him in he became increasingly angry and started yelling at me. I don’t tolerate yelling and looked him dead in the eye and said I’m shutting the door now, have a nice day. Closed the door, locked it and went on with the showing, my clients were not amused at his behavior and were very kind about the whole situation.
I saw that he was still outside as we were leaving and knew he wasn’t finished with his tantrum. We came out and I locked the house up all while he was shouting obscenities…not a problem for me until he stepped in front of me as I was walking to my car demanding I let him in. Fortunately, for me my client is in the Army and stepped in between us. The man quickly got into his car and left. Had he not been there or stepped in I don’t know how it would have escalated, it’s a reminder to always keep safety in mind. Locking the door behind you as you go in the show a house is always a good idea because you never know who is going to invite themselves in!
