Leopards and Giraffes and Rhinos.....Oh My!

The Philadelphia Zoo, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on the west bank of the Schuylkill River, was the first zoo in the United States. Chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March 21, 1859, its opening was delayed by the American Civil War until July 1, 1874. It opened with 1000 animals and an admission price of 25 cents. ThePhiladelphia Zoo is one of the premier zoos in the world.

This hot air balloon goes up and down all day and it great advertising as you can see it from the freeway while entering the city of Philadelphia. I keep seeing the balloon and saying “I want to go to the zoo.”

Here are some pictures from the zoo taken in October 2011. Enjoy. Most of the animals wanted to stay for a picture but the zebra just gave us a butt shot.

Kristin -- I never knew Philadelphia was home to the first zoo in the United States -- your photos are great especially the giraffe.

Hi Michael,

I did not know that either about the zoo history. When I was in Philly, I learned a lot about American history that I had forgotten. It was not until I did my research that I found this to be the first zoo in the US. Can you imagine how the first visitors must have been amazed to see 1000 different animals in person.

Thanks for stopping and commenting.

Kristen, I don't particularly like zoos but the history is so interesting-who knew it was the first zoo in America? The flamingos look very happy!

Hi Joanna,

It i s a nice zoo and all the animals look happy and healthy.  I typically go to the San Diego Zoo and the first thing you see when you wallk in the gates is the flamingos. It makes you feel so inviting.

Thanks for stopping.

Hi Joshua,

Thanks for stopping and thanks for the nice compliment. I love the hot air ballon. I can imagine that it excites all the kids when they are in cars and see it floating up and down from the freeways.

Hi Cal,

Nice to hear from you. Jackie took some nice pictures. I am always trying to get her to send them to me. I liked the zebra butt shot. Probably spend more time out for viewers since it has cooled down. Animals like to sleep in the heat and the humidity is pretty high in Philly some days during the summer. I cannot wait to go to the zoo.

Hi Paul,

Thanks so much for stopping by. I wish I lived closer to the SD Zoo as I adore going there. Yes, it is so relaxing and pleasant plus it is a learning experience every time we go. We were just there about a month ago and had a great time.
