San Diego Light House Celebrates 156 Years New

The San Diego Lighthouse, A San Diego Treasure

San Diego LightHouse

The building turned 156 years old today and to celebrate the milestone, the San Diego Lighthouse at the Cabrillo National Monument Park has now opened the lighthouse for guided tours. The docents of the park that are leading the tours will be found in period costumes of the time. They will guide you up the very steep circular staircase where you will see first hand the work and living quarters of the lighthouse keeper whose average work week was in excess of 84 hours a week. I think the keeper in those times saw tending to the lighthouse as more of a commitment and less of a job. Much the same way many of us think about our real estate careers.

Wow William,  84 hour a week, it does sound like a real estate agent work week.  Thanks for the great blog.

William

I had no idea this existed. I'll have to visit. It looks right out of New England, picket fence and all, and the age even fits. I just saw a neat lighthouse when I visited Kauai perched on the end of a high bluff - it SO reminded me of New England.

And of course your photos are magnificent!

Jeff

William - That second photo is a stunner!  But if I was 156 years old today, I don't think I'd look as good as she does.  She's obviously had a little cosmetic work done:-)

Hi Will, isn't really interesting what we give up to be successfull in our careers. I often wonder how it became a given that weekends are the only times that buyers can see homes.

Hi Jeff, Better plan a full afternoon, there is a lot to see. The Lighthouse, Cabrillo Monument and the views will knock your socks off. It is a wonderful park at the real point of Poiint Loma.

Hi Myrl, Thank you, it is one of my favorites. I am guessing that it has just been so well cared for but I am sure you are correct. I know then have changes the lantern as the old one is in the museum.

Hi Joan, I love it there. I never tire of visiting it and seeing the wildflowers and the amazing vistas. Thank you so much and I very much see this a real treasure that we must look after to preserve.

Oh my that's a beautiful lighthouse. We are so blessed on the west coast. I love them, covered bridges, and barns. You got me going now, I've been meaning to go through my hard drives from previous pc's I still have older photos on! One has about 7 years of travels throughout Oregon and I have a bunch of lighthouse photos on it. This one I have on picasa is at Bandon, Oregon I took back in 2006.

William - you did an outstanding job of capturing the San Diego Lighthouse. I love lighthouses and all seek them out whenever I travel. Long Island got some beauties. Thanks for sharing your beautiful photos - the flowers only enhance the whole scene!

Ah, William, that 2nd picture takes me away! What is it about lighthouses that is etherally romantic?  I think it's my love of the water, fog, mystery, and it also is always very healing for me. Love it and how you mentioned that it's similar to real estate--more of a commitment, less of a "job". I so agree!

Hello William,

What a wonderful celebration and post on your beautiful City of San Diego! Been to the light house myself and (I think) climbed up a bit a few years back.

Nice to see the celebration and would like to see the younger generation understanding the importance. Any idea if classrooms are making field trips? Seems like a wonderful history and also science lesson to me.

Hi René,

It will be great when you get those photos René. The Bandon lighhouse photo is just gorgeous. It's composition looks like it is out of a magazine.

Hi Kristine, Thank you so much. I l=also love lighthouses and as I traveled up the coast I saw several  but only managed to shoot a couple. Many no longer have access and it was so foggy in parts, the photos just didn't come out. But this one is so marvelous because there is so much to see and understand how these lighthouse lens are made. It was really fascinating to learn about the electrical  and candle powered lanterns.

William - Great local story and photos. I have a soft spot for lighthouses. We have some beauties here in New England.
