H.R. 3035: Mobile Informational Call Act of 2011
The “Mobile Informational Call Act” if passed will ammend the 1991 version of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act that made it illegal to use automated calls to mobile phones. HR 3035 was introduced in the House of Representatives and if passed will let businesses use an autodialer to contact your cell phone and leave prerecorded messages.
I am totally against robocalls with prerecorded messages sent to my cell phone. If HR 3035 passes, that is just what’s going to happen. I think our government has more pressing issues to deal with then giving another round of our privacy away and should leave the 1991 version of the act in place.
I’m quite capable of granting permission to auto message me on my cell phone to those I care to without the government superseding my authority. My doctor, dentist, pharmacy, and others have that permission from me already, and I did it all by myself!
Almost 30% of us no longer have a land line and for most it was for the express purpose of escaping unwanted calls. It’s not like the phone company is going broke. As of June 2011 there were 322.9 million wireless subscriber connections in the United States. In July 2011 the entire population of the United States was 311.8 million. So everybody has at least one! There’s 11.1 million more connections than people! |
Our elected officials in favor of HR 3035 will be granting permission to businesses and telemarketers like banks, credit card companies, poll takers, collection agencies, etc. to make high volume automated dialing calls and leave prerecorded messages on your mobile device.
My phone company, bank, and credit card companies already text or email me if they sense something is questionable and want to alert me. Isn’t that sufficient?
I don’t know about you, but I have a family plan that includes 3 of my kids. But, all 4 phones and the account are in my name. I don’t want my kids getting unsolicited robocalls on their phones.
