Tri-Cities residents will not have to worry about getting too drunk or too sick to drive home on a weekend night, thanks to the volunteer-powered Operation Red Nose.
The program will once again be operating in the TriCities, driving those who had been drinking- as well as their vehicles all the way home during weekends between 9PM-3AM starting Nov 25 after New Year’s eve (exceptions to the Christmas weekend).
The program aims for a safe, great ride home specially for the holiday season. If a driver has too much to drink, or is too sick or too tired to drive by himself, all he (or his companion) can do is to call. This selfless act has been run volunteers from its humble beginnings in Ontario 1984. Since then, more than 50,000 has volunteered for the program and thousands of holiday party goers had gotten home safe -free of charge.
Police and other safety officials has long been reminding commuters to think twice about getting behind the wheel, even after having just a couple of drinks. Alcohol and fatigue affects the driver’s perception differently. Not only the driver’s life was put at risk but also other people’s life and property were in the line as well.
Tri-Cities police are adding up some more measures to remove impaired drivers of the roads. Expect more check points assigned on major roads in this area soon.
Red Nose service covers Anmore, Belcarra, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody. This service is free of charge, although donations are welcome. To take advantage of the service, call 1-877-604-NOSE (6673) for a ride. To become a volunteer, email orn@shaw.ca or call 604-941-8606 or 604-341-0241.
