Twitter logoWhen Jeff Turner first introduced Twitter to the ActiveRain community, he said "it has already provided value and a way to connect with people and ideas I certainly would not have otherwise," but ended his post with "Can I guarantee you'll get it? No. I'm not sure I do. :)" And at that point, I didn't get it.

Andy Kaufman wrote about the "real estate digerati" starting to adopt Twitter, and even included an easy step-by-step guide to getting started. Jonathan Washburn followed with an intriguing idea to use Twitter within a real estate office and feed the communications to your blog.

But even with all of that great information, I still didn't see how I could effectively apply Twitter to my real estate business. Part of the problem was that I was thinking of it as it applied to ActiveRain, other agents on my team, or my peer group.

agentgenius.comIt's funny how sometimes the blogosphere can help us tie ideas together. Just yesterday I posted on Connecting with Generation X. That demographic prefers email and text to phone calls, and expects responses in minutes, not hours. Then today I found an illuminating post from Daniel Rothamel at AgentGenius that is part of his series on Social Media for Real Estate. The topic: Twitter. Now that I've been thinking more about how to reach the Gen X and Gen Y market, Twitter makes perfect sense.

Rothamel expands on the original "what are you doing?" concept of Twitter and suggests three great uses for real estate: an educational resource; a networking resource; and a way to communicate with your clients. Included in the post are tips to get started as well as some great info on Twitter apps.

Terry - Not quite 8 PM here ... we have a lot of nightlife left, plus an extra hour! Give me a call when you get into Las Vegas. Thanks for your comment!

John, Sometimes I long for the good old days of no email, no cell, no PC' s, 4 TV stations and 45's.. So much to learn so little time!

Jason - Thanks for stopping by! With as much interaction as there is in ActiveRain Addicts and all of the spin-off groups, I think Rainers could come up with some great networking and business uses for Twitter. Let us know what you think about it!

Ginger - There's a lot to be said for the 'pre high-tech lifestyle'. The challenge with a lot of new technology is to use it in a way that makes our life easier, not more hectic.

John - this is the 3rd time I've read someone mention Twitter here on AR this morning.  I'm guessing that's an omen that I should check it out.  I feel like there are so many of these sites, and I've no clue how to really use them.  But I'll go check this one out, and see if it makes sense to me.

Ann - If we can get more Rainers using Twitter, I think we'll find a lot of creative and innovative uses for it besides answering "What are you doing right now?" As more people use this, I think we'll really see it evolve. Thanks for your comment!

Can I say no to Twitter and still be accepted by the group?? No is a very powerful word I've found.

John... after using Twitter for six months, I stopped using it a few weeks ago. I prefer Jaiku to Twitter, because it essentially allows me to do the exact same thing, only tying in all of my blogs as well. Of course, I can tie twitter to Jaiku as well, which works well, but I post to so many different places, it almost seems like overkill. I'll look forward to seeing the ideas that come from this.

Jeff - Thanks for your insights! It's great having a tech enthusiast like you in the AR community to help us see the possibilities of all of the different tools. I'll take a look at Jaiku this week ... and I've got dibs on the post title "I Jaiku, Do You?"

Hi John, thanks for the mention and welcome to Twitter.

I have to disagree with Jeff a bit.  While Jaiku has more functionality than Twitter, the simplicity & more importantly, the community is what allows twitter to keep growing despite the recent emergence of the other microblogging platforms such as Jaiku & Pownce.

The content I post on twitter is quite different that what I'd write in a blog post.  Sure, you can link to your latest blog post, but it's a different type of communication channel and IMO a step towards a more natural, and free flowing global conversation.

I really think the NAR is going to be the tipping point of Twitter and I'm pumped to see the re.net finally start adopting it.

Andy - I like the quickness of Twitter and the 140 character limit per message. It should be a great way to communicate at NAR, and as more agents see the benefits and adapt it I'm sure we'll see many more creative uses. Thanks for stopping by!
