Last night, Lancaster Mennonite Boys Soccer team won the state championship for PIAA AA division. This was the first time a Lancaster Mennonite boys soccer team won a state title. The girls soccer team won in 2008.
The Blazers beat Tulpehocken 2-1. Mennonite beat Tulpehocken last year and this year in district semi-finals 1-0. This created a sense of uncertainty for Lancaster Mennonite. However, Caleb Cole took advantage of a mistake by the Tulpehocken goalie when he came out too far to play a ball. Cole shot from 25 yards having it bounce just outside the grasp of the goalie and inside the left post. Play went back and forth until halfway through the second half. Cole again dribbled around two defenders and played the ball between the goalie's legs giving Lancaster Mennonite boys soccer a 2-1 lead. The Blazers were able to hang on to claim their first state championship.
