101 Comments on They Are Back! The Boston Celtics!
We were at an AHL Hockey League game and it was a lot of fun. I was checking my Treo to see the score and listened to the last 8 minutes on the radio on the drive home.
The C's are playing way beyond what I ever would have expected. Based on the last few years I keep thinking "is the league that bad or the Celtics that good.
I'm looking forward to games agains the Suns, Dallas, Spurs. That will be a big test.
Hey Jay...wouldn't it be great if you were able to listen to Johnny Most doing the games on the radio..as a C's fan...there was never anything like listening to him call a Celtic's game!
There is Pierce with the ball...he fiddles and diddles then daddles and doodles with Wallace in his shirt steps up and nails a 3....LOL
Jay- I think NBA basketball is horrible....I already feel like an old guy with the last Jordan-championship a decade old. Now don't get me wrong, to play at that pace in any era is GREAT... but the next best team in their division is 1 game over .500.....as a whole the rest of the conference has 2 non-first place teams over .500 (and they're both by one game).
In the West- 9 teams are over .500 so one won't make the playoffs....in the East Atlanta is playing .484 ball and is the 8th best team!!!!
I suspect that they'd be a 23-9, 24-8 team out West at best (which still makes them in the league's elite).
Well Jim..you go as far back as the Jordan era huh....you poor OLD guy!LOL At one time pre-Jordan... teams scored 100 points regularly....Denver used to average 135 points per game...of course they used to give up 137.This was the 80's.
It slowed down with the Detroit badboys and has never returned to that level...they have also watered down the league with expansion and more of a street ball game.
At one time it was ok to shoot free throws underhanded....and free throw shooting wasn't as pathetic as it is today.
The east used to be the best conference as well....but things have shifted...and I don't believe teams under .500 should be in playoffs.....Hockey used to take the top 16 in the entire league for the playoffs...but now I am feeling like the old guy
Jim you feel old? LOL LOL I watched Bill Russell play and Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Elgin Baylor etc...
Now that's old. Those were the glory days of basketball which were rejuvenated with the Bird/Magic era followed by the immortal Michael Jordan. I have not really followed hoops for quite awhile as I see it as too much like street ball and too much thugery (if such a word) and ME ME ME attitudes.
I liked Shaq in his prime and LeBron James looks like the 2nd coming of Jordan but it's not exciting like it was back when I was your age. I was still playing at your age and watched McHale play in college and when I returned to Boston as well.
I like the idea that the top teams play in each conference and do away with Divisions. Just because you win a division shouldn't mean you get to be a higher seed.
Look at the NFL. I felt the Jags should have had home field instead of the Steelers. They had a better record but I am sure there is good debate about that too. Especially when teams play each other twice in each division.
Don't you just love Sports Talk. I could do this all day. LOL Wish I could make money doing it.
Rick, Johnny Most was the BEST albeit a little biased. I always watched the game and listened to Most.
Havlicek Stole the Ball was the most memorable calls in the NBA. I was in the kitchen listening on the radio with my dad when that call was made.
I loved it when he said like you said above. Fiddles and Diddles and then added Daddles and Doodles.
Then when someone would hit a jumper he would say "Bang" I would love to get a DVD of some of his greatest calls. That would be fun.
He hated Bill Laimbeer. LOL What great times.
Jay,I could do this all day too!LOL I came in at the end of the Cowens/Havlicek era and was full throttle for the Bird/Magic era.
You said my feelings exactly...Jordan had the same kind of team James has...and he always lost...then they signed on Pippen etc...and then the championships came.
The new C's are showing teamwork...there isn't a mememe there...so they will continue to be successful.
Unfortunately, there are more teams like the Knicks and less like the Celtics and Spurs.
I had also taken a few year break from basketball...because I hate streetball...but I am back again....and watching a few teams that are enjoyable.
Just a little biased Jay?LOL But,I will say this about his calls...he always called them the Celtics....it was never the "I" and "we" that homer announcers use like they are on the team or on the field.....which is very annoying!
You are right...but didn't everyone outside of Detroit hate Laimbeer?LOL
How about when Ralph Sampson went after Jerry Sichting....he was wild!
I would buy the Johnny Most DVD....but most of his calls were on the radio.
They are back! After 22 years of being doormats, except for the year they had Tony Battie at center and Antonio Walker at the power spot.
You have bragging rights.
