"What are you doning for Thanksgving?" my friend Jim asked. I had been in the US for only a few months and I had no idea what Thanksgiving was. I barelly knew just a handful of people so my social caledar was pretty open back then. Curious and not really knowing what to expect, I gladly accepted Jim's invitation to spend the holiday with Jim's sister and her family.
We drove from Los Angeles up north, passed San Franscisco, crossed the Gold Gate bridge and arrived to Willits, a quaint little town in Northern California.
I didn't really know what was coming. I thought it would be like a Christmas dinner we used to have back home: a festive, but quiet family affair, a nice meal, a glass of wine, and a conversation over coffee. Oh no!
Picture a long dining room table overflowing with all kinds of awesome food: lovely sauces, vegetables, incredible side dishes I had never seen before, aromas that made my mouth water.... And a huge, golden-crisp turkey in the middle!
But the most amazing part were the people. So many fun, friendly, big-hearted folks with endless supply of warm smiles, great stories and cascading laughter. I instantly felt accepted and welcomed by Jim's family as if I was one of them. Everyone wanted to hear my story about escaping the Czecho-Slovakian regime and what was it like to live in the US. We talked and talked late into the night and continued over morning coffee.
Today I have a family of my own and Thanksgiving is still one of my favorite holidays. It's another opportunity for me to say THANK YOU to all you amazing, friendly, and helpful people I've had the good fortune to meet on the exciting journey.
I am grateful for your friendship, kindess, support and love.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
