What’s Your Favorite Meat for Thanksgiving Dinner…Turkey, Ham, Duck, Venison, Prime Rib, Chicken?

www.KristinHamiltonblog.com

I am a southerner but have lived most of my life in California. My mother always cooked a Turkey when I was growing up. As we got older, the menu changed somewhat. Someone wanted Ham! No, someone else wanted Prime Rib. When we lived in North Dakota for a few years, everyone bought Duck or Goose. Between my parent’s and my in-laws, we could never decide on one entrée so I started making Turkey and something else…whatever they all agreed on; ham, prime rib, lasagna. Then my daughter’s friends would come for a visit and they wanted Vegetarian Meat. I respect anyone’s personal preference but on Thanksgiving, vegetarian means bring your own or just eat everything else on the menu except the meat.

So now, I make the decision and it is “Turkey”. I love baked turkey, homemade cornbread dressing, real mashed potatoes, skillet made gravy, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top. OK, we get the pie at Costco and I buy FF Cool Whip. This is the only day I want it all. I usually skip the rolls, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and green bean casserole to make the preparation easier and not so many carbs.

So on Christmas, my husband and daughter pick “Prime Rib” and that is OK as it is an easier meal to prepare and clean up and very tasty too.

Wikipedia says this was the original meal eaten by the Pilgrims in 1621; turkey, waterfowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, pumpkin, and squash.

So we have many choices: Turkey, Ham, Prime Rib, Pork Roast, Venison, Duck, Goose, Quail, Whale, Chicken, Cornish Hens, Fish, Tofu, and Chinese food.

Turkey was traditional when I was a kid, Mom always made 2 turkeys both about 14 pounds, that way there were more turkey legs to go around. Usually had 15 or 20 people over. Favorite Pie< how about apple, blue berry, cherry, pumpkin, or heck any kind of pie will do.

Hi Debbie,

Turkey is my favorite too. We always get a pumpkin pie and an apple pie as my husband likes apple. I also like cherry pie too so I can pass on pumpkin if there is cherry.

Hi Ted,

Turkey so far is the favorite. I do not think I have had blueberry pie before and I love blueberries. I will have to check at our local Marie Calendars as they have most every pie available.

There is usually turkey and ham that shows up on my Thanksgiving table.  However, there were a couple of years, that I served Cornish Game Hens.  And one Thanksgiving, I served Duck with Muscat Orange Wine Sauce.

Hi Patty,

Yummy Blueberry Pie. It sounds delicious but I do not think I have ever had it. Probably back in Tennessee but too young to remember. I am going to Marie Calendar's for dinner on Thanksgiving so I bet they will have Blueberry Pie; they have just about all kinds of pies. Do you have a Marie Calendar's in your area? I think they are nationwide now.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi Joni,

My favorite too. I am a southerner so my mother always made cornbread (not the sweet stuff but the yellow cornbread with lots of bacon grease) and then she would mix in some Mrs. Cubison dressing and then mix all the veggies, broth, and lots of sage. So that is how I make my cornbread too. She made it in her cast iron skillet. I think I know where it is so if I can locate it or if not it will be made in my glass brownie pan.

Happy Turkey Day.
