FHA Bridal Registry - I'm doing it!

I have never heard of this before, and the author of this blog Erna Sigurdsson was so kind to share. Lot of help is available to first time home buyers.

I read a blog about the FHA Bridal Registry here in the 'Rain a while back (I can't remember who wrote it or when) and I just thought that was the neatest thing ever. I told myself that if that day comes that I will get engaged I will surely be setting up my own FHA Bridal Registry. Now, as I posted in my blog yesterday I'm Engaged!! to the sweetest man ever.

My first mission before I go tackle anything else, is to set up my FHA Bridal Registry. I called my trusty loan officer, the one I trust the most and sent her the information about the program to get started.

Now, why would I be so excited to set up this FHA Bridal Registry and why does it matter to me so much that I have it set up right away?

Well, we are going to have an Engagement Party, we are likely to recieve some gifts for that. Then in May, my Fiance will be graduating from UCF with his Bachelor's Degree, it is highly likely that his relatives will want to send him gifts then. Then there is the wedding itself, more gifts. Instead of recieving a lot of physical presents, toasters, wine glasses, blender, dust ruffles and knife sets, we can be working on the FHA required downpayment. This also gives the opportunity to recieve smaller gift amounts without going through all of the required paperwork for gift funds for the FHA loan. We can recieve gifts as small as $20.

Starting FHA Bridal RegistryWhat do I have to do?

As the borrower, I work with my lender to set this account up. I will have information about this FHA Bridal Registry account to send with my Engagement announcements, Save the Date cards and Wedding Information. This serves the same way as if I were registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond or at Macy's for my Bridal Registry. We will also be sending this information along with Graduation announcements for my Fiance's graduation this Spring. Once we are ready to purchase our home, instead of having paperwork and gift letters for each of these gifts, we sign a statement that these were gifts from friends and family.

How does it work?

The FHA Bridal Registry is allowed to be used whenever there are major gifts expected, therefore you do not have to necessarily be on your way to walk down the isle. It can be used by expectant parents, college graduates or for Civil Unions. There is no timeline set on this program. In my case, our engagement will be for 1 year and 5 months and we expect to buy our first home once we are wed. However borrowers do not have to get married in order to use the FHA Bridal Registry.

Family and friends may directly deposit into the account or give the borrowers funds in the form of cash or check to deposit into the account. They may be more inclined to give more generously, knowing that the funds are going to the couple's first home.

You can find out more information about the FHA Bridal Registry on the HUD website.
