Small Business Saturday – Stores to visit in White Plains NY

Small Business Saturday  had its debut last year.   But they are upping the publicity and ante this year.  In my opinion – a program like this is a step in the right direction.  In Washington they jawbone about supporting small business – but talk is not action.  Yet small business, including bricks and mortars  have traditionally been the backbone of American exceptionalism and success. They need and deserve our patronage and support.

Our love affair with big-box stores and rock bottom prices has  come at a price.  Service?  What’s that?  Knowledge of the product? You’ve got to be kidding me?   In addition there have been bankrupt businesses, lost jobs that paid decent wages and less money coming into the community.  Consider this:  when you spend $100 with a local merchant, $68 returns to the community. When you buy at a national chain – only $43 is returned to the community.  Thats a 37% difference in direct  economic stimulation.

White Plains NY has quite a few big-box stores, but there are also many  local merchants  that  are open for business on Saturday and have a great deal to offer beyond the same-old, same-old.  Here are a few of my picks for the weekend.

Magnotta’s Car Wash:

Magnotta’s is  on Central Ave. in downtown White Plains.  Why would I pick a car wash?  Because as a real estate agent that has two dogs constantly in my car – I know they do a good job!  They are also holding their annual holiday blowout sale which includes savings on full service washes and complete detailing services.  I bought my package yesterday and will enjoy the savings.

Westchester Road RunnerWestchester Road Runner:

The Westchester Road Runner has been around for many years.  It is located on 179 East Post Road just off of Mamaroneck Ave.   I have been shopping there for a long time and you don’t have to be a runner to enjoy their shoes.  They have just about the largest selection of running shoes around – anywhere.   They are recommended by podiatrists everywhere  who have issues with their feet.  I need to wear rather bulky orthotics due to a severe case of flat feet and my doctor told me in no uncertain terms that this was the place to go!  Right now they offer a woman’s running clinic on Monday night. They have  a great selection of outer wear that we all can use outdoor activity.

American Terrain Outdoors:

Located right next door to the Westchester Road Runner – these two stores complement each other.  American Terrain  tends have a wonderful selection of outer-wear geared to general outdoor activity. Think warm hats, gloves, jackets.  Some of which would make great stocking stuffers.  Last year I bought some Yak Trax from them and they saved my life (or at least my knees) during the messy, icy, winter we had last year while I shoveled snow and walked the dogs on icy terrain.   If you ask, American Terrain Outdoors is offering $10 off a $50 purchase and $25 off a $100 purchase on Small Business Saturday as well as through Christmas Eve.

Straight A’s:

Got a young scholar on your short list for presents this year?   Want to get the kids a gift that educates as well as entertains.   This is a new store  at 180 East Post Road  and it has unique and educational offerings  for kids of all ages.   The former scientist in me spied the science kits in chemistry, physics and DNA. They also had some great simple stocking stuffers in the form of colorful pencils, erasers and other small items for the school backpack.  There was  a lot to take in here.  From tots to teens there is plenty of unique inventory that is  a far cry from the vanilla big-box toy store fare.

So there you have it – Four local merchants ready to do business with you on Small Business Saturday!  Happy Shopping everyone!

I was, actually, wondering why a car wash.  With my dogs I DO get it!!  ;-)  Small businesses add so much flavor to the local environment.

Nice variety of highlighted small businesses. "Shop Local" is a great idea both during the holidays and year round, and a key to a thriving local economy.

Hi Ruthmarie, This is a wonderful post and one I am sure these merchants really appreciate. Not only that you shop there but that you believe enough in their products and services to tell the world about it. I think we should all do a bit more of this and your's is very timely with Black Friday on the horizon.

Have a Wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving Ruthmarie and thank you so much for your friendship and many comments this past year! I will try and do better myself. With 3 groups  sponsored it makes it a bit more of challenge but one I am committed to overcome :-). I also hope you will do more photo blogs this one and add to the ActiveRainPhotoBlogger group.

This is a great list profiled here Ruthmarie.  It's a great idea for folks that can't distinguish locally owned vs. big stores.

I like the running shoe store, you can always use a pair of shoes with good support. I am curious now to just take a drive downtown here and see what we have. I used to know, but so much changes over the years.

Ruthmarie - I had no idea the return to the community was such a huge percentage with small businesses.  That's an eye opener.

Ruthmarie -- YES!  While the big box stores and large retailers may dominate the various media outlets with lots of commercials, small business is the backbone of so many communities.  They support little leagues, candy drives, local parades.....they need and deserve our support.

This is a great idea to shop locally and I hope this catches on soon.  We all need to support our local merchants to ensure their survival.  The big box stores are OK for some things but none of them have the charm of a local shoppe.

Ruthmarie, what a  great localism post and how right you are.  We all need to do our part to support local businesses.  Straight A's sounds like one I'd like to check out.  (BTW love your web page!)

HI Carla -
I was trying to figure out why this got soooo many comments!  Local post generally don't have that much in the way of legs...Didn't notice the star and somehow didn't notice myself on the leader board!  DUH!!!

And dogs - yes they ensure that Magnottas has a steady stream of business from me1

Hi Leslie - Happy Thanksgiving to you too!  I am planning a couple of more before Sat.  This is a big issue for our area.  We need more small businesses having success.

Hi John - Too many people run to big- box stores. It's time for us to champion local business - after all we are in business too - so we should "get it."

Hi William - Thank you and I always look forward to you blogs.   Your photography  is wonderful and an inspiration to us all.  Hosting all the groups that you do is very difficult.  Just doing that one contest was a challenge - but I have to admit, I had a blast.

Hi Kristen - Sometimes it isn't obvious.  We have a music store that has been around sooooo long that everyone thinks of it as local -but of course it is part of a big chain.

Hi Bud & Beth - I have to say that it is shocking how many stores we have lost in the towns that I work.  Take a drive downtown, but be prepared for empty store fronts or new faces where neighborhood "institutions" used to be. The Road Runner is amazing.  I have a very bad problem with my left foot.  The orthotics and the staff at Road Runner allow me to walk the dogs and live my life without major surgery.  My podiatrist - Dr. Scaggs reccomends them exclusivel for walking/runing shoes to fit his patients who need orthoitcs.  They are known to be excellent. Runners as well, depend of them as well.

Hi Tammie - Just watch the wallet - you could easily spend a fortune...Too much great stuff to choose from.

Hi Christine - I didn't know until recently as well.  It really is an eye-opener and something that we should encourage.

Hi Michael - in the rush to get the most for the least money it is hard to remember that these Mom & Pops really contribute so much to the community.

Hi Doug - They also give back more to the community..It's amazing how much more the community gets back from these small retailers.

Hi Donald - I hope to see you out there too!

Hi Leah - Thank you - yes we must support the local merchants.  They are also a source of jobs that big box can't match in terms of salary.

Hi Tatyana  - It is important - so go out and shop til you drop....

Hi Katerina - I thought of you for Straight A's...What a great resource for someone who home schools!

Hi VB!  THanks for the side dish...they are very....green!
