An Attitude of Gratitude : Coloradoans Give Back
We were challenged this year to bring to the attention of our readers an individual or organization that truly embodies "An Attitude of Gratitude". This inspired us to bring to you different opportunities throughout this season of giving where you might be inspired to help those less fortunate. Our series "A Season of Giving" will continue through the entire holiday season, but for the purposes of the challenge we are introducing you to not one, but two, charitable funds that inspire us because they're success lies solely is the giving spirit of Coloradoans.
9Cares Colorado Shares just celebrated it's 29th annual food drive and Coloradoans came out in droves, generously giving more than 413,000 pounds of food and a record shattering $152,551 in cash donations, helping restock food bank shelves across Colorado.
Since the first 9Cares in March 1983, the annual effort has grown from a modest food drive with a single collection site to the largest one-day food, clothing and toy drive in our region.
9Cares believes that the items donated in a community should stay in that community. Food collected in the Denver Metro area is now being distributed to 125 food banks in the 9Cares network. Clothing was collected by ARC Thrift and Goodwill, which will in turn provide local clothing banks with vouchers. Toys collected will be donated to families in need through the Denver Santa Claus Shop.
The Dom and Jane Show hosted their 13th Annual 24 hour Charity Marathon for the Food Bank of the Rockies last week. During this 24 hour period they raised $1.1 million dollars which will in turn provide 4.5 million meals. When Dom and Jane first had the idea for their Charity Marathon thirteen years ago they put it together in three days and raised $30,000. A great first effort, but look where they've come since then thanks to their generous, giving listeners.
So in the end we suppose we are bringing the good, caring and generous people of Colorado to your attention. Even with times being so difficult, you continue to find a way to help those less fortunate in our community. We salute you!
