Old MacDonald had a social network, E - I - E - I - O.

And now you can, too, free for nothing. Old MacDonald got nothing on Y-O-U!

Reprinted here by permission of the author, who is also me just like I am, is my ParticleWave article, Reductio Ad Myspace.

This weekend at the bookstore I browsed through Andrew Keen's Cult of the Amateur with a lot of interest. I also looked into a book that's probably at the opposite end of the Web 2.0 Hype-o-Meter, Wikinomics.

Keen argues with some justice that with the huge proliferation of blogs, the Internet has become a write-only Darwinian struggle to see who can filibuster the longest, with everyone yapping our heads off and no one really listening.

What?

Wikinomics, on the other hand, left me wondering how I, too, could benefit from this whole massive collaboration thing to become blindingly wealthy and massively collaborated, but I couldn't come up with anything off the top of my head.

As they say on Ron Popeil Commercials: "But wait, there's more!"

Now not only can your blog be one of over 50 million blogs in the keyboardosphere, now you can be the first on your block to have your own social network, thanks to Ning.com. In the words of Ning CEO, Gina Bianchini:

"Marc and I founded Ning in October 2004 to give everyone the opportunity to create your own social networks for anything."

Atta girl, Gina. That's just what we needed, social networks for anything!

And in the true spirit of Web 2.0, I have decided that if I can, of course that means I should, so I am now the proud owner of not just one, but TWO social networks, with me as the one member each!

That was the whole problem with MySpace, come to think of it -- they let YOU in. Now we can each have our own MySpace, which for the sake of clarity we can call MyMySpace, to distinguish it from YourMySpace and ThatOtherGuysMySpace.

No, but seriously, come join me. We can massively collaborate, at least on a small scale. Won't that be cozy?

The first network I noticed when poking around Ning was the virtual Sangha. Hey great, I thought, I'm a Buddhist, but it turns out that one's by invitation only.

Well, at least I'm not the only anti-social Buddhist with his own social network.

But I have two of them. So there.

After that, I decided to check out the RightHealth Social network. Below are some of the forum questions from RightHealth so you can get an idea of the quality of the discourse.

I didn't wait for it to get this bad, it was the first thing I bumped into.

I wonder if I started a Luddite group if Andrew Keen would join me.

John, that's pretty interesting.  So, you are the member, the moderator, and the admin for the network!  I wish you well in your ventures with this; keep us updated as to how it turns out!

All this networking is great for learning and meeting other people, but it all seems like it is conducive to not getting anything else done.  You could spend all day and night doing all this blogging and networking and not selling anything.

John,

Anoher way to get yourself out there.....and keep you too busy to do the business we are in.....there has to be an easier way.....or at least some shortcuts....I am trying to educate myself in the web world to see if there is a niche for me too....

I look forward to see how this works for you.

Oh no!

Sorry I didn't respond to your earlier comment, Maureen.  I was going to say "that's the first time in the history of the Internet that someone resisted the urge to do something."  Oh well.  Next time maybe.  :)

So aren't you going to invite us in, or is it just for Buckeyes?

No... it is just for Maureens.  It's called The Maureen Corps.  Did you see the hacker who is trying to prove they rushed into OpenSocial too quickly hacked into Ning.com, I think it was just into an application on a network on Ning.com,  same guy that hacked into something on Plaxo to show that he could.

Ah. There are only so many hours in the day. Consider this: you can be in the right place at the right time without participation yet be out showing property, writing offers, taking listings.

Maureen, that's hillarious. And by the way, for all you other Maureens, make sure you join her:

I agree, Elizabeth.  The point of marketing is to become self-sustaining, and I think I have a decent story to tell in that respect, as you do.  But please don't judge me by this little bit of satire, I have seventeen serious posts written in the last two days, so I try to keep up my end. :)

Hey weren't we supposed to have lunch?  Whatever happened to that?

John,

To start your own social network is an intriguing idea. At least there already is a ready-made platform for it, that Ning.com. And the best thing is that it can be for anything. On the other hand, it's kind of scary to think that it can be for anything.
