WHEELS AND EARS ~ A New and Valuable Service For The Elderly

A Safe Ride and A Second Set Of Ears

Wheels and Ears Medical Companions, LLC

Have you had to accompany one of your parents to doctor appointments because they had no means of transportation to get to their appointment and you were the only one who either had the time or could do it at all.  Did you have to take time off from work or a busy schedule and sometimes it amounted to at least once or twice a week if it was physical therapy?

Did your parent have the transportation and they were dropped off at the doctors office but when they were through with the appointment had to wait a long time before the ride came back to get them and take them home.  This happens all too often, and that is how this wonderful service was born.

There are many concerns and fears facing Seniors when they are visiting their doctor, especially if they are alone.  Will they have enough time to cover their concerns.  Will they feel rushed, unheard and misunderstood.

Sometimes they find that by the time they were done telling the doctor their concerns the appointment was over and they did not receive answers to their questions.  Sometimes the Senior does not understand what their doctor has said to them and then forget the instructions by the next day.

These concerns are just a few of the things that

Wheels and Ears Medical Companions, LLC is there to help with.

  • The companion organizes the Senior's concerns and information and presents it to their doctor in a concise way that will allow the Senior quality time with their physician.
  • The companion takes notes before the appointment for the doctor.
  • With the Senior's permission the companion will stay with them and take clear notes on what the doctor says.
  • The companion also brings the Senior home with notes signed by their doctor regarding the appointment for the Senior to refer to later, in the quiet of their home.

They also ride in a nice vehicle with a safe driver who is used to driving people in their cars, this companion is your local Realtor.

Debbie is recruiting only Realtors at this time because she realizes, having been in the business for 38 years, that Real Estate goes up and down in cycles and there are many times when we are less busy, and that is the time seniors usually have their doctor appointments.  She also knows that Realtors are caring people, good listeners, and used to preparing information accurately.  They take pride in giving back to their communities.   Realtors in 2009 in the Portland area donated over 39,400 hours of community time.

There is so much more to know about this much needed service and I can say that I am now a part of this community of Realtors that are beginning to work with Wheels and Ears Medical CompanionsLLC.  It is a way to give back for me plus it is also a way to earn a little income doing something for someone else.  There is a charge that the Senior pays when the appointment is finished, something they have agreed to and understand prior to making the appointment.

This service will eventually go nationwide,  the plans are already in place.  Baby boomers are maturing and the generation or two before them are now the elderly needing help that their families cannot always provide. It is perfect if they are able, but we all know that is not always possible.

If this is something you might want more information about please do not hesitate to get in touch with Debbie and let her know, and should you reside somewhere outside of the Portland Metro area and are interested in participating,  she will help you become licensed in your city to operate Wheels and Ears.

The doctors here have been thrilled with this service saying "it is about time" and thank you because it gives the physician more quality time with their patients.  The Seniors are saying:

  • "Why didn't someone think of this before and you have turned a stressful experience into an enjoyable one."
  • "The transportation part is great, but having a nice person to guide and take notes for you is far more comforting."

All I am saying is that this is a wonderful service for the elderly and their families and it is

Hi Mary, oh boy is this one hitting home. I've been doing this very thing for the last couple of months and this past month has been daily rides to St. V's with my MIL and being in there with her often recording what the doctor says so she can play it back. This is a great service..and who knows, one I just might have to call on one day when I just can't do it myself and my sons can't do it either. Thanks for sharing this. Hope you're having a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Hi Cindy,

I thought this might hit home a little.  I know it can be so stressful for all, the elderly and their families.  It takes so much time.  This service charges $35 an hour that the client pays at the end of the appointment each time.  If there are continuious appointments, many a week, and so on, there is a discount because of so many trips.  It ends up that the companion spends about 3 hours with each client.  Meeting them at home or nursing home if that is the case, taking notes to find out why the appointment so they can give to doctor.  Taking them to appointment and staying with them the whole time, whether in the doctor's office or in the waiting room, up to the elder.  Taking notes on what doctor said, making their next appointment if necessary and then home again.  Explaining the notes to them at home and then leaving the notes with the elder for them to refer to and perhaps for family to see. If the elder is happy with the companion then that companion is the continuous person that does this so the elder forms a bond and is comfortable with it all. The companion and company do not keep any personal information of the elder, the notes are left with the doctor and with the elder.  Very safe.

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, wow Christmas is around the corner.  Take Care

Hi Russel thanks so much for stopping by. I hope your Thanksgiving was also good, ours was quiet and very peaceful.. Black Friday is not something I participate in.  I don't like the frenzy of the crowds, too much for me.

Awesome service and so needed, my dad has expressed frustration of late with his docs not really explaining what's going on...I've decided that it's important for him to share the dialog with someone else...it's hard to determine if my dad is missing something in the conversation...or if the doctor is rushed and really that insensitive.

This is an awesome service.  I know even for myself if I don't write down my concerns then I forget something.  With this service the companion meets with the person a half hour before leaving for the appointment to see why they are seeing the doctor.  Sometimes the person goes off on a different subject forgetting why they were there in the first place and by the time they get to the reason the time is up.  It also helps if someone can take the notes of what the doctor said and what he wants them to do, notes they can read later in the privacy of their home.  If they let the companion accompany them into the room, the companion turns their back and just takes notes so their privacy is not invaded.  They also have the doctor take a look at the notes and sign off making sure they are accurate.  A lot of positive for the person/client. Plus the companion does not keep the notes they are given to the doctor and to the client and if the client wants the companion will be the one that takes them the next time so all is familiar.

Ubnfortunately, doctors don't have the time they used to have and it helps to have the notes the companion takes with the client before leaving for the appointment.
