I'm a copywriter. I love words, but not this one!

First, let me say that most of the time, I think spelling is easy.

There have been a few words in my life that wouldn't "stick" but I've figured out tricks to get them in my head. For instance: Pend Oreille.

That's the river that flows past the town of Priest River, so when I was an agent I used to have to refer to it any time we had a listing on the river. I never could remember if it was Oreille or Orielle...

Then one day I remembered that all along the steep banks of Pend Oreille Lake there are old mine shafts. Mines produce ore... So Pend Oreille.

OK. Got that one.

Now I have another one, and sometimes I garble it so thoroughly that spell check can't even figure out what I was trying to write.

The word I simply can't spell is BUREAUCRAT.bureaucrat

I can't figure out any trick to make myself remember it, so I've come up with a new plan. I printed it on a piece of paper and stuck it to the bottom of my monitor so I'll see it every time I look at the computer. And I've got a chunk of scratch paper laying by the keyboard - where I stop to write the darned thing every now and then.

Somehow, some way, I WILL learn to spell bureaucrat.

So now... share. Tell me:

Do YOU have any stubborn words that won't stick in your head?

I'll confess Marte - I'm dyslexic - and as a result I have a poor visual memory.  Spelling has always been a challenge.  When I had to write publications - I always had someone check to be sure I hadn't made any gaffes.  I admire anyone who finds spelling relatively easy. Bureaucrat is difficult!

Hi Marte,

dependent on the copy I am writing, and how fast I am going, spelling can become a challenge never mind that English is my second language...

For me spelling will remain to be a struggle

Pfanntastic Thanks Givings

Ruthmarie - It sure is! For some reason, my mind just doesn't want to put the letters in the correct order. Meanwhile - I've never noticed any goof-ups in your posts, so you must have it handled.

Peter and Linda - I would never have guessed that English is your second langugage.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Teri - You learned your word faster than I learned mine. Good for you! It's pretty bad when you garble it so much that spell check can't figure out what you're trying to write - which is what I did with bureaucrat - more than once.

Whenver I type REALTOR® it seems to first come out the way most people say it, RELATOR.  Even though I never pronounce it that way, I can't seem to type it right the first time out.

Chris Ann - that sounds like me with "the" and "and." When it comes to those two words, my left hand always gets ahead of the right... I correct a whole lot of teh and adn.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

The one word that I have to check every time is lien.  It would seem easy to remember "i before e, except after c, or when sounded as a, or if the word is of Welsh origin."  Isn't that weird?

Marte I’m a visual speller and when I need to spell the word “catch” I just can’t pull it up visually. Hole in the brain I guess. And I just love people who tell you to go look it up in the dictionary :-)

Mike - I've always heard "I before e except after c." That may be why it took me so long to learn to spell Pend Oreille. But I've never heard the Welsh origin part before.

As for "lien" - at least you aren't being tempted to write "lean." I've seen some writers do that - just like they write "Meat me at the cafe."

David - Yes, that is funny. If you knew how to spell it you could look it up. It works if you've got the first few letters - but when I was trying to spell bureaucrat it was the first few letters I had mixed up.
