There are a lot of good reputable SEO's out there. In your search there a few things I would look out for.
- Avoid companies that guarantee specific ranking. Nobody can absolutely guarantee a ranking on Google or any of the major search engines. In most cases these guarantees are either on an obscure search engine, PPC ads, or on your own name.
- Avoid companies that SPAM your email or cold call. These companies have no problem violating CAN Spam rules, which is an indication that they will ignore search engine guidelines.
- Avoid companies that talk about using javascript redirects, cloaking, keyword stuffing, or autmoated link building methods. These all violate Google guidelines and could get your site penalized
- Avoid sites that have a one size fits all methodology. SEO is different for every site and qualified SEO's will give you a customized proposal based on your needs. Some sites require full service SEO from scratch, some just need a bit of tweaking, and others may want consulting services. There are many levels of service and good SEO's will offer different pricing for each.
