Victoria Hard of HearingStrategies for Communicating with those Hard of Hearing

In Real Estate, Society and Daily Life, being able to communicate and interact  with others is often an presumed ability by everybody that we are connecting with.
However, often either due to the affects of aging, physical limitations, and or health issues, the person that you are communicating with is really not hearing what you are trying to say.

Today Janet Holland reminded us of 10 excellent strategies and tips to best communicate with those hard of hearing.  Janet Holland is a Certified Audiologist, associated with the Island Deaf & Hard of Hearing Centre (IDHHC) www.idhhc.ca., and shared her strategies and knowledge as a set of simple tools to enhance our ability to communicate with the hard of hearing.

In Janet's excellent presentation, she also reminded us thatVictoria Hard of Hearing the tips that follow likely will appear as common sense, however the challenge seems to be that even the many people that are making an effort to do the right things, do often revert back to their old ways very quickly.

Hearing loss can result in loneliness, isolation and withdrawal. By using the hard of hearing communication strategies provided, you may be able to keep your communications with the hard of hearing engaging, supportive  and truly enhance the lives of those that might otherwise could be forgotten.

  • Reduce Background Noise.
    • Turn off the TV, Radio and any other noise makers like dishwashers, running water etc.
  • Reduce The Distance.
    • The ideal distance to communicate with a person is 3 to 6 feet.
  • Watch the Lighting.
    • Good lighting helps to see what you are saying.
    • Don't have the light shine directly into the eyes of the person you are talking to.
  • Get the Attention of the people you trying to talk to, before you start talking.
  • Keep your Mouth and Face Visible.
    • Don't turn your head away when talking, as the lips and facial expressions form an important part of your communication.
  • Speak Slowly and Clearly.
    • Don't Shout or Exaggerate your Lip Movements
  • Keep Sentences Short, and to the Point.
    • Listening with a Hearing Loss is very Fatiguing.
  • Repeat what you have said if the you were not understood, clearly.
  • Re-Phrase if Repetition does not work.
    • Sometimes using different words, or saying it in another way is all it takes to be understood.
  • Use a Pen and Paper.

Good evening Peter and Linda,

This is excellent advice! I have a beautiful sister-in-law who is deaf and it is amazing how she can read your lips. Your facial and hand expressions are crucial in her getting the gist of the conversation. She speaks wonderfully but it does help if you are 3-6 feet away when carrying on a conversation. Her husband is a gem and has continued to build hr self confidence and has never ending patience :).

Excellent advice Peter and Linda. I just got off of the phone discussing a wonderful elderly gentleman who is having a terrible time with isolation due to hearing loss. You are so right with every bit of this advice. It's difficult for both sides to communicate but, I really feel badly for those who are experiencing the isolation and loneliness.

HI Joni,

In all my years in one form of business or another we have always worked with a few hard of hearing clients, and in the past it was very common to almost ignore them and seek either an interpreter and or sombody with the ability to sign, but it is truly amazing how easy it is to properly communicate with the hard of hearing if we take a littl time and effort.

Hi Dorie,

Thank you so much for your story about your sister in law, the support and encouragment of those close to those hard of hearing goes a long way from preventing them for being or feeling isolated and unloved.

HI Janice,

Thank you, yes without our ability to communicate with "all people" including the hard of hearing we really loose out on engaging and supporting our entire society, and that can never be a good idea.

Hi Renee,

So very true, we have had a few hard of hearing client recently and just taking the time to make sure that they understand and have to time to get comfortable with the way we speak, helps a lot as well.

Hi Peter & Linda,

I couldn't help but come back and comment after reading your comment on my post..I should have known you were a "Sweat Hog" (graduate of the Floyd Wickman Course). Remember CITO? I still live by that premise to tell me if I want to work with a buyer! If they are not willing to CItO than I'm not willing to work with them :).

For one who is suffering from hearing loss, I can whole heartedly endorse the suggestions. I ask people to repeat themselves way too often. Have a great weekend.

Peter & Linda, Those are all great tips. Using them will help both the person with the hearing loss and everyone who sincerely wants to communicate with them.
