Is It Just Wrong to Love a Phone? True Confessions from My Fickle Heart!

Is it just wrong to love a phone?

My Torrid Love Affairs with Technology

 Then & Now

Flash Back - Early 1996   Then

I met a tall handsome Robot at an NAR convention in 1996 and I could not stop thinking about him!  I was totally infatuated with this cutie strutting around on the stage promoting amazing technology planned for the real estate industry.  Of course, like any star struck groupie, I fought my way back stage after the show and expressed my love.

I found out this tall handsome dude of a Robot was going to be in Dallas in a couple of weeks.  That was all it took, and I quickly wrangled a date with my new robot dreamboat and wanted to show him off to my office of about 70 agents and staff at our next office meeting.

WOW!  The big day arrived!  I stood with my new main squeeze at the door and he personally greeted each agent as they came in the door for our regular early Tuesday morning office meeting.  Rob, my new robot love, was charming and mentioned something very personal to each agent.  He knew their nick names, where they had eaten dinner the night before and tons of other very personal stuff.  It was fun watching the agents faces.  To an agent, they were all blown away and impressed by my new love.

How was this possible?  Actually Rob's owner was hiding in a nearby closet with one of my staff members, who could see out through a crack in the door, and was telling him each agent's name and something personal about them.  My staff member got a little out of control and took this opportunity to spread a little juicy gossip so this made her day.  The things Rob Robot knew about some of these agents! :)

Rob's owner finally came out of the closet!  He shared tidbits regarding exciting technology for real estate we would be seeing soon.  I can tell you that this was all pretty exciting news.  What I can't remember is exactly what all this good news was as it is long past, some never happened, some disappointing, and ALL HISTORY NOW!   The difference between THEN and NOW is like the difference between night and day.  This was the "cave dwelling" days of technology for the real estate industry, but Rob, my Robot love, totally captured my attention and fueled my already blossoming love affair with technology.

It is easy to see that Rob, my robot heart throb, was quite a guy!  He was handsome, tall and he talked a good game.  Like many other men, Rob talked the talk of which dreams are made of and I fell hard: hook, line and sinker!  I DID catch the dream!

I am so over you, Rob Robot!  Lots of talk, not so much performance!  You were the first, Rob, to light my fire and you paved the way for my being ahead of the curve often leaving the competition sitting in the dust.  I admit I have fallen for many others over the years and some would say I am fickle.

Fast Forward - Today - Late 2011  Now

Okay, now I want to introduce you to the new love of my life!  What you see here is me hugging close to my heart my latest love, my new iPhone 4S.  I am in love again!  It is a well known fact that good girls always love those "bad boys" and let me tell you, my new love (I call him Sam) is bad to the bone and faster than a speeding bullet.  His 4S chip enables him to be my Intelligent Assistance Performance "go to guy".  Sam will follow my every voice command, with help from his assistant, Siri.  I have never known another man who would simply do whatever I say.  How cool is this?  I tell him to call my new client or my best friend and it magically happens!  Sam can show me the way home or to an appointment.  I can let him know I am hungry for my favorite food and he shows me immediately the closest place for a fix.  I talk, he listens, even if I wake up in the middle of the night wanting information.  Like many men, Sam does need the help of a good woman, thus Siri is there to assist!  Sam keeps track of my email and I can send text messages by voice command.  This is power!

As much as I loved Rob Robot back in the day, I am so over him and all those promises he made to me.  I have been fickle in the past and fallen for many a fast tech talker over the years but now I have finally found my true love.  Talk about high performance!  My voice is his command!  Did I mention that he is fast!  He also has a mean camera!

I love you, Sam, my faithful 4S iPhone!  Sam, you stole my heart away from my old Blackberry, Buster.  I had been a Blackberry woman for years, but I left without looking back!  Blackberry and robot both gone, can hardly remember their names now as I am on to a new love.  Do you remember the start of any new romance?  Remember those early days when all you could do was think about your new love?  Well, I am in big trouble!  I have never been a Black Friday shopper, but I was secretly shopping on line on Black Friday for special accessories for, you guessed it, Sam my new 4S iPhone!

Is it just wrong to love a phone?

I don't think it is.  I have been preparing for this for years, since my first love affair with what's his name, that Robot.  He gave me the dream, but I had to move on to other loves through the years to finally find my true and forever (?) love in my new iPhone 4S which I have named Sam.

Why Rob, Sam and Buster for names?  I just could not imagine loving a robot, iPhone or Blackberry with names like Rosie, Sandy or Bonnie.

My new iPhone 4S is providing new options in taking care of my business as I plan my marketing and Action Plan for 2012.

My 2 years contract on my phone is very recent, but I think I'm going to have to cave in at renewal time and switch to AT&T or Verizon so that I can make the switch to an iPhone.

Charita - this may well be worth your caving in on the contract.  I have been with Verizon for about 10 years now and and used an upgrade, but I think they have some good deals on this new phone for new users.

Sally - well you do have to sort of kinda work on those relationships.  :)  I bet you could cozy up pretty quickly if you worked on it a bit.  That is the way I was with my iPad but strangely I just clicked with the phone and it is helping me to do better with the iPad.

Barbara,

Cute and funny blog. Who is your service provider for the new I-Phone? I have an old I-phone that needs to be replaced and we have AT&T who absolutely sucks here in Houston for anything!.

Bob - I switched from AT & T about 10 years ago because the service was so bad.  I have been with Verizon ever since.  I know of several people who switched from Verizon back when AT&T got the first iPhones.  Most of them have sweitched back to Verizon now and they should have some good pricing for new clients.

Hi Barbara: love your post - you could have put it in the comedy group. I never bonded with my blackberry - not really. So he didn't get a name. But am eager for my new iphone in the next week or so. Think he will get along very nicely with my ipad - still nameless as yet.
