"House" is Not a Keyword - And Other Mistakes You Might Be Making
You may already know about keywords, but I have to say this is a great blog to help you clean up your blogs. Tammy is definitely one of the most knowledgebale SEO people I have read on Active Rain! Very impressive knowledge and worth subscribing to!
I tweak a lot of websites and every time I start with the keywords, I find the biggest mistakes agents have done when setting up their website. "House", "Home", and "Real Estate"; these are the keywords most commonly used. These should not be keywords and they are not to be singled out in your meta tags.
"But, that's what I do! Shouldn't that be one of my keywords?" Not unless you want to compete with 18 million other agents all over the world. Keywords need to be clearly defined and intentional. Don't throw 50 keywords in there because you probably can't optimize a page that well for 50 keywords. Google likes about 6-12 keywords max per page. You probably can have unlimited amount of pages in your site, right? So use the best ones for your homepage and space the rest out over your other pages.
For example: "Sedona Homes" is a popular keyword for that area right now with moderate competition. The combination of the keywords is what makes it unique and specific. You don't want people from Alaska searching for "homes" and Alabama agencies come up. This makes no sense. You want to be specific to your area and exactly what people are searching for.
If a town or city itself shows a lot of searches but not a lot of competition then use it for your real estate site. "White Salmon WA" is a great keyword for real estate in the Columbia Gorge area because there was little competition but thousands of searches.
If rentals are big in your area, promote this with all the variations of keywords you can think of such as "Fort Rucker rentals", "homes for rent in Fort Rucker" and "Enterprise homes for rent". Each of these can then be directed to the page specifically for rentals.
One More Thing ~ Don't use your name as a major keyword unless you are very popular in an area and people know who you are by name from commercials or billboards. Less than 10 people per month probably search your name so go with your area and use your niche to carefully choose the best keywords for each site. Optimally, 2-4 words per keyword phrase is perfect.
