Purple Gallinule

My favorite color is purple.  I love the movie “The Color Purple”... my Droid cover for my phone is purple.... one of my bathrooms in a former house was Violet Stone by Benjamin Moore... and one of my favorite birds at Green Cay is the Purple Gallinule.

The Purple Gallinule is a member of the rail family and lives primarily in warm swamps and marshes.  We’ve been lucky enough to spot them out at Green Cay in Boynton Beach, Florida but they’re not as prevelant as the Common Moorhen or the American Coot.

I love to watch them climb very gingerly out to the end of the stalks of Fire Flag, their favorite food of choice at Green Cay.  Known for their big feet,   I once saw an industrious Gallinule use his beak and foot to bend fireflagback the tip of the stalk so he could better reach their prize...a purple flower!

If you’re out at Green Cay, look carefully and if you’re lucky you’ll see the sun just glancing the wings of the Gallinule and that’s when you’ll see the most gorgeous colors Mother Nature has given us.

Hi Kathy,

Purple is a favorite color of mine as well.  My very favorite is a rich green though.  I love your photos.  Quality and beauty.  Perfect.

Excellent photos and the colors are so neat.  I wonder if this bird would survive in the Chicago weather.  Mom loves purple and loves birds.  Thanks for sharing.

Good morning Kathy. What an unusual bird. Terrific pictures and narrative explaining them and your proclivity for the color purple. Have a great day.

Wow stunning Kathy!  I have never seen anything like these birds.  That's one draw back the desert has we have no birds of color.  All are brown to blend in and be protected from predators.  The lack of colorful birds was one of the hardest things for my wife to adjust to when she moved to Albuquerque from Alabama where all birds are brilliant with color.

Kathy, nature does provide us with a full box of crayons and fortunately you were able to grab a few.

I would have loved to see the search for the treasure up close and personal.

Great shots.

Enjoy the day

Ginny- it's been a gorgeous day here and these birds always bring a smile to my face.

BLiz- LOL- well there's always global warming!

BarbaraT- and no gators!

Gary- how funny.  We need to take our cue from Mother Nature.  I've seen some doozies in houses!

Keith- I was afraid they were gone for good from Green Cay when the PTB decided to drain the Wetlands for some unknown reason.  It took over a year to get them back and there aren't as many as we used to have.

Debbie- I always went for the purples and periwinkles in my box of crayons.

Dorie- I wonder if there are any down by Corpus?  I'd never seen one until I moved to Florida.

David- Mother Nature is remarkable..we have purple Gallinules and pink spoonbills!

Stefani- I bet you can find them out in your area too!

Cindy- lately I've gravitated towards certain greens as well. Still love purple.

Chiara- I'm seeing that there are a lot of people who like purple too!  Great choice.

Bud & Beth- Oh.... too cold for these guys!  But you never know.

Sheila- I had a video of them inching towards the end of a stalk of Fireflag but can't find it.  It was hilarious.

Joanna- next time you're in South Florida, take a walk out to any of the nature centers and I'bet you'll see one.

John- never realized the correlation between desert animal and birds having to blend in with the sand, etc.  I was amazed at all of the different birds I saw when we moved to Virginia... ones I'd never seen in Texas.

Don- Now that they're back, I'm taking my video camera out to try to get a shot.  With their big feet, it's hysterical.  And, I managed to see a baby once and there was no mistaking the huge feet .

I believe I've seen that little guy at the San Diego Zoo. The birds at the Zoo are difficult to get pictures of because they have so much foliage to hide in.

Purple is my favorite color and I think I've seen The Color Purple at least a dozen times or more! Those birds are absolutely beautiful! I just finished reading Mimi's post on ordering holiday cards through MOO. A box of cards with these birds would be perfect!

I'm glad I stopped by to see your birds. They brought a beautiful smile to my face.

Sally- thank you.  They're best seen when the sun hits the wings just right.

Sharon- every day is a new day.  No gators this a.m. but saw a hawk and lots of coots.

Janice- I've been a little lazy lately and haven't taken my 'big boy" camera but will have to start again.

BARFF- thanks!  I gravitate towards anything purple.

Eric- I've run into the problem of not being able to get off the boardwalk to get close enough to some of the birds.  That's ok, though... not fond of snakes or gators.

Patricia- I think I've seen The Color Purple at least half a dozen times.  Love it.

Joni- I can see you liking those colors!  Would have been surprised if you'd said brown or blue.

DeeDee- I'd never seen one until moving here.  I'd love to see one of their nests but they really hide them.
