Heating Up

There are many ways you can make your new home more energy efficient. Preventative measures can help reduce energy costs and make the home even more appealing to future buyers. Here are five things you can do.

1. Evaluate the condition of your insulation. Heat can escape through attics and walls that are not properly insulated. If your lining is old and thin consider upgrading to newer, more effective material. Experts recommend a thickness of at least 100 mm, but 150 to 200 mm is even better.

2. Assess your water heater. If it is in an unheated area, such as a basement, heat can escape from the unit. Consider adding an insulating blanket or insulating wrap on your water pipes.

3. Seal windows and doors. Start by checking for drafts using a thread. If you find a flow of air use caulk or weather stripping to stop the heat from escaping. Consider installing energy efficient replacement windows.

4. Upgrade your heating controls. A programmable thermostat can help by lowering the temperature in the home when you are not around, such as during the work day, or at night when you are snug in bed.

5. If you need to replace home appliances, choose those with the ENERGY STAR designation. These machines meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Energy.

Looking Good
Buffet style eating is often the easiest way to entertain during the holidays. Make your table more interesting by using varying heights. Elevated cake plates and tiered serving dishes give a table more interest and create more space. A tall centerpiece or candles of varying heights are also great.
