Bethlehem CT, The Christmas Town for Many

Over the next few weeks, this little post office will be the hub of some extensive activity, as people line up to get a special Christmas Cache for their Holiday Mailings.

Since 1938, the little Post Office in Bethlehem CT has offered special Christmas post marks to it's customers. This has grown over the years as people look to get just a touch of the Christmas Spirit to the outside of their cards and letters for the holidays.

The Post Office even has special extended hours to accommodate the lines of people that will come up .

The hours this year are as follows:  Starting Friday December 2

Friday December 2 only:                        Lobby 6:30 AM to 8 PM  Window:  8 AM to 8 PM
Saturdays, Dec 3, 17 & 17:                    Lobby 6:30 AM to 3PM  Window:  8 AM to 3 PM
Monday Thru Friday Dec 5 to 23rd       Lobby 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM  Window:  8 AM to 5 PM
Dec 24th                                                     Window    8 AM to Noon

The Post Office has featured a new Cache every year since it started this special service. The designs are created by local residents, artists and children. The full array of Caches can be seen at the town's Web Site.

For people that can't make it to the town, they can mail their cards to the Postmaster, Bethlehem CT, 34 East Street, Bethlehem CT 06751. All that needs to be done is to have the cards addressed, properly stamped, and placed in bulk into a larger envelope and mailed. No additional postage is needed. If a cachet is preselected, they will use that or will use the new design for the year.

Bethlehem CT is located in Litchfield county in CT, approximately 150 miles from Boston and 100 miles form New York City. Normally a very quiet little town but in December it thrives with visitors trying to get just a little extra Christmas Spirit.

Rene, if you follow the link to their web site you can see them all.

Peggy, in height of season they wait in lines all the way out the doors.

Ken, go figure, they haven't figured out a way to get a penny more out of it.

Ellie, if you wish, or you can send them straight to the post office and include one to yourself as well.

Ed, that is pretty cool, I remember doing much the same thing around Valentine's day...as you would imagine the P.O. in "Loveland" Colorado would also be a hub of excitement around then.

Ed I can imagine that people will travel for miles to have a post mark that says Bethlehem on it.  I should take a trip up there some time.

Well, this certainly is the place to be over Christmas.  I wonder if there are any other Bethlehem's in the U.S.
