Many San Diego County residents had their homes either damaged or destroyed by recent fires and are now starting the road to recovery. Lots of services are available to assist folks get back on their feet.

A local company in the Carlsbad area is helping in a couple of ways!

Green Planet Solutions is an industrial and engineering consulting company based in Oceanside focusing on hazardous waste. They also offer programs to schools to teach about proper recycling, information on how to properly recycle hazardous products, and other services.

Green Planet Solutionsis helping the environment by collecting our e-waste so it won't end up in the landfill: computers, monitors, TVs, toys that are electrical in nature, DVD players, VCRs, car batteries, microwaves and much more (note - they do not accept washers, dryers, refrigerators or AC units, but provide a list on their site of companies that will pick these up, or residents can often arrange pick up from their respective towns).

You simply call the company at 760-639-0672 and they will pick up your e-waste for free in Oceanside, Carlsbad, San Marcos, Vista, Encinitas and Escondido.

The best part is these items that are in good working condition will be given to families in need due to losses from the fires. Items that are non-working will be transferred to E-World of Vista for appropriate destruction and disposal.

If you are in the local area (residences and small businesses) this is a great way to get rid of unwanted appliances, electronics and computers systems in an environmentally safe way AND help the families who have suffered losses from the fires. Green Planet Solutions deserves a big round of applause for their efforts!!

Jeff.

This is a very important post.  I just gave it a "mental 5".  It's the least I can do.

Waste disposal is one of the worst parts of disasters like Kartina, which has yet to be claaned up.  I don't expect the recovery in CA to be nearly as bad or time consuming.  But, you are right.  Just getting rid of debris and recycling what can be, is hard but important work.

Jeff- These companies provide a tremendous service.  I think this will definitely be a growth sector business as we continue to add more electronics to our lives.

Jeff, this is a great idea, I have not heard of anyone offering this around here.  Every once in a while I have to take something to the dump because my waste hauler will not take it with the normal trash, and I always see these items there.  It would be great if they some how offered up the ones that still work to the public.

Thanks, Lenn. I appreciate the compliment. THere is so much more that can be done around hazardous waste removal, and it will only get worse.

Thanks, Rich. Many towns around here now offer e-waste removal, but taking it a step further like this company is doing is great to see, especially given the fires.

Kaye - I think you're right. I think the opportunities are outstanding for the future, and something will need to be done with all this stuff!

George - I thought it was a great idea too. Some charities will also take things as well but many are getting more specific about what they will and will not take. And the amount of this type of waste is only going to increase (unless they deveop something that self-desctructs!!).

Jeff, this is a well thought out post. Whatever people can do to help has to be a plus. Acting is what counts.

Diane - thanks for your thoughts. I agree, it makes lots of sense, and it encourages folks to continue thinking more about environmental issues.

Mary - I, too, was very impressed. We need to see more of this (I expect there is alot going on, we just don't often hear about it).

Lloyd - that is so true. Actions are most important. I continue to see more and more of the services that are out there for the fire victims - housing, emergency supplies for the homes, retailers donating items for those who lost their homes, etc.

Jeff - and we need great people like you to get the word out! I would much rather hear about positive things such as you describe than all the negative in the mainstream media! Thanks!

Jeff - Thanks for sharing this great resource!  I love it that if the items are still in working order they'll be put back into circulation and to good use.

Marlene - agreed. How many of us have stuff like that laying around the house or packed away because we don't know what to do with it. And they come pick it up - how much easier can it get?

Jeff -- what a great resource.  I wonder if they know of any similar companies in or Near New Hampshire.  I am going to send them an email and find out.  I was unaware this type of company even existed.

Jeff

Thank you very much for the blog. Thank you for supporting recycling and letting people know of our free services. We hope that some day recycling will become part of every day culture and not a cost.

Our phone number is 760-639-0672

Thank you again Jeff. Not enough people get involved with recycling and it is needed.

Thanks again

Joan - I would also check with your town - they may do hazardous waste recycling. Also a Google search. I would be surprised if there weren't something similar.
