Seller, Say it Ain't So! How to Not Advertise Your Home

There are plenty of safety tips for sellers on the internet but here are a few that we have run across:

When your home is on the market, please do not leave any of the following messages on the answering machine:

Hi there is Mary Smith, leave a message. If you are calling about the house, I will be at work from 8AM to 5PM (or whatever your schedule), show anytime during those hours. Or worse-we will be on vacation from ____to____ so show anytime.

What this means to everyone that calls you is:

No one is home between these hours, feel free to burglarize anytime between 8AM-5PM. Or, if they would like to go ahead an move in, we will not notice.

A few things that you should do are:
Pick up your newspapers as you head out for the day.
Set light timers on lamps so that it appears as if someone is home.
Let your trusted neighbors know when you will be gone.

*Bonus if you can find a doorbell that sounds like a hungry barking, snarling pitbull or rottweiller!

This is our poodle Tiny Tana Tumbleweed (she does have an attitude and is from Montana-hence the tumbleweed part of her name) laughing at the doorbell comment...

I wanted to reply personally to this but had my robocommentor do it for me as I am out on vacation until 2014

Too funny David, at least the few times we do comment on listings we actually look at the home and property (and not anything about wishing a fast sale) unlike some point mongers around here.

Really, really want to 'steal' your line though and use it on those folks! :)

Good morning Larry and Jacque. What a fabulous post on so many levels. People can be really dumb and I see it on social media all the time too. Folks post about being somewhere on vacation with pictures. Hello? Suggested.

Hi there Sheila, thank you very much! One of the personal favorites is the vacation countdown on social media. Nothing on those sites should ever be considered and you never know how many friends of friends, followers or whomever likes whom will not take the information and use it to their advantage.

We don't do the public countdown but we do post our photos afterword.

Unfortunately, what can be thought of as helpful to real estate licensees (the unfortunate VM message) can really open the doors to people that you may not want to open your doors to.
