Do You Use the One and Two Letter Marketing Approach? Hey, Go for the Four Letter Word?

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Properties

 Me, Me, Me!  Big I!

Are You Guilty of Old Hat Marketing?  What's your style?

What exactly is your approach to marketing?   Do use the "Big I" or the "Me, Me, Me" approach?  These one and two letter marketing techniques are so old hat and will not work in this new age of real estate marketing.

Back in the day, when it was all about ME, this type of marketing was acceptable and even worked.  The agent's picture, usually a Glamor Shot, was larger than life along with the name and phone number of the agent.  No one had to guess who this was....it screamed at you loud and clear.  That was BI (before Internet as we know it today!).  The larger the ad, the better and the public bought it!  Lose the Glamor Shots, Real Estate Divas! Guys, still going for that GQ look?  Really?  Those were the days, my friends!

How about Them?

It is long past time to take that "Big I" and the "Me, Me, Me" out of your marketing and start using that three letter word, "YOU"  or the four letter, "THEM".  That's right, folks, today it is all about "THEM" and "YOU" (as in them).  Savvy buyers and sellers today are not interested in what you did for the past umpteen years.  There are agents who list every single award or diploma they have earned or paid for, right after telling them all about their wonderful dogs.

It is no longer all about "I" or "Me".  It is totally about what you will be doing for  "THEM"!  Oh, you can still list your accomplishments in a not so visible place on your website's "About Me", but you need to be sure that you do not just talk, talk, talk yourself out of a commission.  You could likely have that precious picture of you and your pup, but keep it low key and not "in your face" as not everyone is a pet lover.  You can sell a lot more with less words!

The newer three or four letter marketing approach is all about "What YOU will receive", in other words, it is all about THEM, the clients, those elusive buyers and sellers we all desire to reach with our marketing.  Today's buyers and sellers will judge an agent as professional and worthy of engaging by their Internet presence, locally, nationally and even globally.  Once you start talking about what is in it for THEM, you will get their attention.

Today's savvy real estate consumers live on and by the Internet daily both personally and professionally.  They can spot true professionals at a few seconds glance.  You do not have much time to make that good first Internet impression.  Forget the "I" and the "Me" and check out your marketing approach and get it in tune with today's buyers and sellers who are in the marketplace.

Today's Smart Real Estate Professionals Toss Out the Old Hat Marketing, keep those ideas which worked THEN as fond memories and are on to what works today!  This is the "them" generation of consumers.

Cindy - I cringe when I look at the "Bragging Book" I was supposed to give out to clients when I first started selling real estate.  It was stuffed with awards and certifications.  Today I pull out my iPad and go right into what's happening in the market and how I will market their home.  Enough about me!  Even I'm sick of me!

In my area most of the buyers & sellers are looking for the top agents to work with, it is very competitive. If I didn't self promote the phone would not ring. But when I do go on the appointments whether it is a buyer or a seller my marketing plan and service is totally focused on them & their needs not on me.

So true! You can't market I or Me you have to market them! I think doing both is a great way to show what you can do for them!

Hi Barbara--today's consumer has so many choices and so many places to research that the "I" approach turns most of them off.  People will look for those who are successful, but I don't think they care for the braggarts.

Hi Barbara, I am late coming over for all discussions going on here, but I have noticed in the last few years, it has been all about "Them". Of course, they do need to know that they have a reliable and competent professional who is able to help them for all their real estate needs. That was one of the reasons that I took my photo and image off the front page of my Tri-Fold Brochure. The about me is now on the back of my brochures.

Happy New Year!

Jerry - it just makes good sense to react to consumers in the way that they desire.  Happy New Year!

Eric - true.  I think the message is really the same, it is just the way that we word things - putting the consumers in the spotlight with us being the strong support system.

Faye - thanks for the compliment!  Hope it works well for you.  There is a big story behind that tag line and I plan to post about it pretty soon.  I have been under the weather the last week plus, but I will get that out the first couple of weeks in 2012.  Enjoy and good luck!

Sandy - me too!  LOL!  I actually love the changes that the Internet has brought to our industry.  Enjoy your New Year's Eve!

Gail - I remember those brag books too!  It is lots more interesting and fun to pull out our bag of tricks using the latest technology and let THEM know what to expect.  Enjoy your New Year's celebration.

Joan - I certainly never stop promoting, it is just the manner in which I promote in this market.  I know my phones would stop dead in the water if not for promotion, the focus has just changed and it is working for me.

Christina - other businesses actually "got it" before the real estate industry.l  It seems we are always a little behind retail but we can certainly learn from them.

Ben, you are right, it is a combination of things and today's consumers quickly see through anything that smacks of arrogance.

Janet - ditto!  People do want to deal with successful people and there is a better way for me than telling all about me.  My marketing supports the "me" without me having to shout it.  I never stop branding.

Angel - thank you.  I say we never miss a chance to brand, brand, brand ourselves.  I do have a post coming out about agent branding in the near future.

Wandanna - you used an important word, LISTEN!  Clients will tell us so much if we just shut up and listen to them.

Praful - thanks!  I was excited to get one more feature in this year.  :)  Best wishes for a great 2012!

Jonie - good point.  Consumers are looking to "hire" someone and they want to know what they are going to get.  Happy New Year!

Gita - thank you!  Best wishes for a wonderful New Year's weekend....and forward through to a great 2012!

Adrian - it is amazing how much as changed in our business.  I am looking forward to the changes we will see in 2012.  Here's to being prepared!

Dave - thanks.  Best wishes for a terrific New Year.  May 2012 be the best ever!

Jerry - I did the same thing.  By putting what is in it for THEM on the front and inside of my brochure provides great information and they finish up with my photo and contact information on the back.  Enjoy your weekend and best wishes for a great 2012.

Barbara,  Great post and it is so true!  Although I have read many postings, I'm new to posting anything on active rain.  Hopefully I will be able to provide some informative blogging and also learn a lot from everyone here.  But our company's marketing it exactly what you are talking about.  It is marketing that is personalized to the homeowner to attract and keep their attention.  The agent can provide any information they want for THEM while receiving reporting about who could be looking to list.  We are definitely on the same page with providing information and marketing personalized for each person you are trying to reach.  The more agents can provide potential clients with pertinent information that applies specifically to them the more they will get a connection with that potential client and gain their trust and business.

Again, great post and I look forward to reading more....
