AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE - THE ALAMEDA FOOD BANK

AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE - THE ALAMEDA FOOD BANKThe Alameda Food Bank, a totally volunteer service in 2010 provided services to an average of 1,350 individual recipients per month from the Food Bank’s office/warehouse.  The Food Bank has set a goal of providing 1000 turkeys or hams to their recipients this holiday season.  They have nearly reached that goal.  But the need is still there and they ask the people of Alameda to continue to donate turkeys and hams.

According to their missions statement "The Alameda Food Bank's mission is to provide nutritious food to the low-income residents of the City of Alameda on a non-discriminating basis. The Alameda Food Bank is a private, non-affiliated, non-profit, tax-exempt agency. Board members and virtually all staff are dedicated volunteers from the community."

The Food Bank was founded in 1977 and originally operated out of a closet in the back room of a church. Last year the Food Bank’s fifty regular volunteers.

The Food Bank has become one of Alameda’s primary social service organizations operating cost effectively to provide low-income residents of Alameda with a "five-day supply of nutritionally balanced groceries, at no cost to the recipients. In addition to its regular food distribution program, the Food Bank is the Alameda distribution site for USDA government surplus food and also acts as a comprehensive information and referral service, advising our clients of the availability of other social services."

Kevin:

Thanks for your comment.  The Alameda Food Bank is one of those places where they make you feel good when bringing a bag full of groceries.

Evelyn, what a great organization to support. There's a billboard I pass on 101 on the Peninsula for Second Harvest Food Bank, showing a child's face and the words, "when your hungry, nothing else is important." (or something along those lines. It hits me like a ton of bricks every time I see it. Our office is a drop-off point for Second Harvest.

What a great share about your foodbank.  We have hosted meals for Thanksgiving through a Foodbank type process, I know what a large undertaking it can be to do this type of work, my respect for what you do and thanks for sharing your story.

Lottie:  What a touching billboard.  I am such a softie, I'd cry every time I saw that sign.

Mary:  the day I was at the food bank, every volunteer was busy filling carton with food.  Some of the volunteers didn't want to photographs and I am sorry about that.  They should all be acknowledged for their work.

Tom:  :  Yes, the Food Banks are an important source for those who have very little, especially the kids..
