The Christmas Tree at the Eaton Centre.

Some years it just seems easy to get into the Christmas spirit. Other years require a bit of a kickstart.

One of the methods that I employ to ease me into the Yule-tide frenzy is to make my annual pilgrimage to the Eaton Centre, right in the heart of the Canadian retail beast. This never fails to work. It's like a personal Haj for me. I come to pay homage to the rampant commercialism that drives our economy and inspires many Canadians to live beyond their means and spend sleepless nights worrying about credit card bills.

The Christmas tree at the Eaton Centre is pretty much like the Kaaba in Mecca. People tend to shuffle around it so they can get a view from all angles.

The tree is absolutely spectacular and well worth looking at. Every year the tree is decorated by Swarovski with over 10,000 of their beautiful crystals.

Photographs do not do justice to this tree. It is set up on a rotating platform, and the crystals reflect the light when it slowly turns so a still picture can't really capture the way the multi coloured lights dance all around the tree. It really is the centre piece at the Eaton Centre from mid November until January.

You can't get too close, there is a barrier in place. I suppose this discourages people from trying to nick the crystals. I do not have a clue how much all those crystals are worth, but I would imagine the value of them amounts to quite a pretty penny. I will have to look that up, so that I can inform everybody in next year's blog post.

I definitely do feel more Christmassy after looking at the tree for a while. Maybe it's the healing powers that crystals are said to contain, or maybe it's something else. Either way, if you happen to be in the Yonge-Dundas area for some Christmas shopping, why not duck inside at the Eaton Centre and have a gander at the tree. It might just give you that kickstart you need to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Malcolm, WOW! That is a lot of crystal. Sounds like a beautiful sight in person! Glad I don't have the job of taking it all down and packing it away!!

It looks gorgeous, I love when there is that one thing that happend durig the Holidays and whenever it comes up you know that that time of year has come. It isnt black friday or all the other shopping or the music, but something like that which really gets you into the spirit.

Sonja, Amen to that, I'm glad I can admire it without having to do any of the work involved.

Bud and Beth, I agree, there are certain things that get us in the mood, and you're absolutely right, it has nothing to do with Black Friday.

Wow, Malcolm, I have been to the Eaton Centre many times, but I guess never at Christmas, because I do not remember seeing this tree, and I do not think I would forget it.  btw, I didn't really think you were a "humbug" type of guy ;-)

Malcolm, I'm going there next week! I read in the paper that they have moved Santa to a higher floor and you can Skype him now!

Malcolm - So glad you made the yearly pilgrimage to the Eaton Centre and got into the Christmas spirit!  I would love to see this tree in person.  I'm like a Magpie - I love anything shiny - preferably diamonds, but Swarovski crystals will do.  The tree looks lovely.

Meanwhile, here in Florida, I'm still riding around with the convertible top down.  It is REALLY hard to get in the Christmas mood when it's so danged warm!  This tree looks gorgeous -- wish I could see it.

I'm enjoying your blog posts -- you have a great sense of humor!

Hi Chris, no you wouldn't forget it if you saw it.

Janice, Skyping is good, but I know you want to sit on Santa's knee. You've been so good all year.

Brian, it's really worthwhile, it's becoming a Toronto tradition.

Sally, a magpie might get into a bit of trouble with that tree. There's lots of tempting shiny ornaments.

Thanks for stopping by Jo. It might be a little harder to get into the Christmas spirit, but I'd trade places right now, it's so damp and miserable out.

Malcolm - the tree is amazing but according to something I read they won't be having Santa Clause there this year. Wishing you and yours a Very Merry Christmas

"I listen for a living." It's all about you.

Amazing tree needs two photos to capture it all.  Around Boston this weekend I noticed many cars driving with christmas trees on their roofs.  I love the smell of the tree in the home.  Glad you are kick started, but I will be careful with my credit cards.
