Be The Match

None of us are exempt from having heartache touch our lives, or of knowing someone who might be in a life-threatening situation.  It often feels empty when we say the words, "Is there anything I can do to help?"  People may not be able to think of anything at the moment, and we leave them with the empty encouragement to "Call me if you need something."

But here is an outstanding opportunity to help people ~ friends, loved ones, and strangers alike ~ and very possibly save a life.  When you hear the words 'bone marrow transplant,' most people (me included) think PAINFUL for giver and receiver.  BUT THAT IS NOT AT ALL THE CASE!

be the matchA family acquaintance is dying of an aggressive form of leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant.  There were 18 million people around the world who did not match her, and at the last minute the PERFECT MATCH, a complete stranger, just happened to join Be The Match!  According to the friend's daughter, all you need to do to join is complete a health checklist, give them your contact information, and then just swab your cheek with a Q-Tip!  Voila - it is all FREE!

But here is the absolutely BEST PART to possibly saving a life.  If Be The Match should ever call you someday because you are a PERFECT MATCH for someone anywhere in the world, more than 80% of the time your donation for a bone marrow transplant would consist of sitting a a chair for a few hours with a needle in your arms.  In selective cases, they need to obtain the stem cells from actual bone marrow.  If that is the situation, you are given a general anesthetic and a needle is used to collect cells from the back of your hip bone.

Isn't that AMAZING?  It could be that easy to save a life!  Be The Match is an organization that empowers all of us to give help and hope.  According to their site, more than 10,000 people need a bone marrow transplant, but only half will receive one.  Click on any of the links in this post and check them out.  The life you save may be a loved one.

Will check into this myself, and reblogged for my readers. Also suggesting it since everyone should have the information and opportunity to decide if they want to participate. Thanks for the info...

Thank you, Roseanne!  I thought it was a MARVELOUS opportunity to do something truly profound.

Hello, Kathy!  Would love it if we could get some people to participate.

That is awful, sweet Rose.  I can't imagine someone asking and not rushing to donate blood for their situation.  My blood type is "universal donor," so I think there is some responsbility there.  ;)

Hi Meems! You know my thoughts on this - after all, I'm donating my kidney (whenever Barbara finally reaches 19% or less kidney function)! There are so many ways we can literally save lives be it giving blood, get a relatively easy blood test for a bone marrow match or even checking 'yes' to donate your organs should something happen to you. Thanks for shedding light on this very important issue - you may just save a life or two!

Thank you so much, Michelle.  Truly appreciate the reblog.  This is definitely a worthwhile cause.

Hello, my darling Brian, so good to see you . . . I hope that many are motivated to 'swab.'  I'm going to do it also.

Wouldn't it be wonderful, Ronald, if we saved a life?

I am actually already in the national registry.  I registered about six years ago, when my sister was diagnosed with acute myloid leukemia and needed donors.

I was not a match for my sister, and I have never been called, apparently I've never matched with anyone else ... but if called I would answer that call.

Well good morning, darlin' Kris!  So good to see you!  You are so right, and this seems like such a worthwhile thing to do.  Wish that yours would be this easy.  Wouldn't it be wonderful to get word out enough that lives would actually be saved?

That is exciting to hear, Alan.  I plan on getting swabbed soon.  I think it would be so exciting to be able to give someone a 'new life.'  Did your sister find donors?

Hadn't heard of it either.  Awesome, thanks for the info Mimi.

Am disappointed though - I read through the info and started the process.  They used BMI (instead of other - better factors) to rule me out as a donor.  :(  I regularly donate blood and we collected the cord blood cells from my first pregnancy for use.  I'd love to get on the registry and help but they say "no".

I am a huge fan of donors.  I have a brother-in-law with Leukemia, and wondered what would happen when, or, if, he gets to the point of needing a transplant. So many people, walk for the cure and donate money.  This is another portion of that commitment to help.Something that everyone can do.  Last summer at several concerts we attended at RedRocks, there was a booth set up and they made a pitch on stage for donors. What a huge audience they had, I hope that they signed up many people. Just keep putting it out there and reminding everyone, is such an important thing.  Thanks for the reminder, I hope that everyone will be able to light a fire!

I was not aware of this program either.  I think it is easy to forget just how important it is to donate. Suggested!
