Holiday Ice Rink in the City of Rancho Cordova

Rancho Cordova Ice Rink

In the Greater Sacramento City of Rancho Cordova, a special attraction has been set up for the enjoyment of young and old.

The Cordova Community Council, City of Rancho Cordova, and many community partners, have for the very first time, set up a Holiday Ice Rink.  This evening I was driving near the intersection of Zinfandel and Data Drives, when I came across this delightful scene next to the Rancho Cordova Community Christmas Tree.

It was fun watching adults and kids, either on the ice, or enjoying other carnival activities.  Chilly winds are still lingering locally, and the wind-chill factor isn't very comfortable.  Yet, the kids and older souls didn’t seem to mind.

The 60 by 80 foot ice rink is located in the vibrant Capital Village area (near Highway 50).

The ice rink is open seven days a week from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.  Skating sessions are 2 hours in length.

Prices are: $8.50 per adult - $5.50 per child (12 and under and seniors 62 and older).  Skate rental fee is $2.00

Myrl- I love this photo.  We have a small "ice" rink near Delray's 100 foot tree and the whole area is filled with the spirit of the holidays.

Hi Myrl,

I love the photo; one of the prettiest I have seen in a long time. Funny thing I had forgotten. My Dad was a pilot and we were transferred to Travis??? I think when I was 7 and we lived in Rancho Cordova for 1 year. I went to a nice elementary school there in 1960. I had a great time but don't remember much more. Then my dad got transferred back to Minot, ND. Thanks for the memory.

Happy Holidays.

Hi Myrl, Your night photography skills are wonderful. The clarity is excellent. The Hotel Del has an ice skating rink set up and hopefully I will get a chance to go there next weekend, i hope I can do half as well in snapping a few photos.

Myrl - how beautiful.  I would never have thought of an ice rink being in your area of California.  I love the way they have it decorated.  What a lot of fun for everyone.

Myrl, Those are really is a great photos!  It does sound like a lot of fun!  We have had our own skating rink here the past day or two, unfortunately it was Interstate 15 and the other roads around here!

Kathy - Each year there seems to be more of these little rinks showing up in areas where you would least expect them.  Florida has to be among them.

Kristin - If you were in Rancho Cordova in 1960, and then came back today, you likely wouldn't recognize the place.  It has gone through a lot of changes.  It is at the beginning of a renaissance currently.  And it has grown significantly.

William - When I came across this scene, I knew I needed to photograph it.  The bad news, I didn't even have my glasses with me, and I couldn't read the settings on the camera.  However, I managed to find the "Flash" setting on the dial and bipass any "fancy" professional settings and snap these photos. . .LOL  It was too darned cold and windy, to stay long, haul out a tripod and get really serious with the pictures.  I would have liked a little more clarity with the skaters, but night-time photos with motion are more difficult.

Juli - It was a shock to me when the City of Sacramento put up its first winter outdoor rink in the downtown area several years ago.  Then the City of Folsom put one up for a couple of years, but not this year.  This was a first time event for Rancho Cordova.  I hope they continue it each year.

Tony and Darcy - The determined folks that were out last evening in the cold wind enjoying this activity, were having the time of their lives.

Mitchel - Thank you for your kind words!  I use Paint Shop Pro's Animation Wizard to create slide shows.  A couple years ago I did a tutorial on the process which can be accessed via: http://activerain.com/blogsview/1317373/activerain-photo-blogger-animated-blogging-tutorial-using-paintshop-pro

Norma - It seemed like everyone was having a great time.  Unfortunately, I wasn't properly dressed for the windy chill, so didn't stay long!

Myrl - Well with your usual good eye for composition and good heart for interest!  Some of the municipal rinks have failed under economic pressure ... I'm glad to see some surviving!

Myrl, I use to love to ice skate and would love to skate at the Rancho Cordova rink as I have never skated outside..only indoors.  How much fun to skate and see all the beautiful Christmas lights.l

Great photos Myrl and the price seems pretty reasonable. We don't have too many ice rinks in Florida and I kind of miss it. Growing up in the Toronto area, I used to skate all the time. We even had a back yard rink.

Hi Myrl, Your photos are great! I think the clarity is excellent and hope I can do as well when I visit the ice skating rink at the Coronado Hotel. My photos were't anywhere as good last year because the lighting was very poor and the noise in the photos rendered them Grey and ugly ( I had set the ISO too high at 800 and it was horrible) but I would use the speedflash this year which should help some. :-). I have been meaning to get a Hoodman eye cup which is less than $10 and it would help those of us who wear glasses a great deal. I have to squint so much that the lines  around my eyes have become permanent, ( they are actually wrinkles but lines sounds less old). LMAO

Myrl, your holiday photos are so wonderful. You always get good photos even at night. We have not been out yet....but I would like to go out soon for some night shots. I took one last night of our little tree and we'll see how it comes out. We've been recovering from the flu and so I've not been getting over to visit as much. Sure enjoyed my visit tonight. Hope you are having a wonderful Holiday Season and enjoy your evening!

At first glance I thought this was the ice rink downtown at 7th and K Street, which is where I was last night. We had our downtown Lyon office Holiday party at the Mexican restaurant by that ice rink. I thought that's what your photo was until I noticed, hey, wait a minute, there was no ferris wheel there, LOL. On our way to the party, we passed the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the Capitol. Caught the very beginning of it. Pretty cool.
