Its Cold and I Don't Wanna Move

It’s cold and I don’t wanna move

“It’s cold and I don’t wanna move in the winter.” That’s the excuse I hear all too often up here in North Dakota. Sure, we get the usual ‘I want to take my listing off until spring’ reasoning quite frequently. But with winters that’re cold enough to chip your tooth on soup…moving in the winter seems, well – horrible.

And that argument does carry some clout. I mean, who wants to be outside in the frigid cold?

But think about it – if winters are rough, then you want to be inside…right? And what does the majority of moving involve? Packing, cleaning, unpacking, and sorting. For a few hours it involves moving boxes and carrying furniture. One or two miserable afternoons will get the job done – and then the rest of your time can be spent indoors where it is bathing suit weather year-round.

So if your clients are questioning having you carry their listing in the winter – reassure them of the spectacular idea of moving while Mother Nature is at her worst. It leaves more summer days for you to enjoy and relax in. It gives you something productive to do when it’s horribly cold outside. There will be less lookers, and this means less interruptions. And, of course, the people who come and look will be more serious.

Besides – moving in the winter gives you something social to do with friends. Most every move involves pizza and beer – so throw your clients a winter moving party! It’ll be a wonderful break from just being bundled up indoors.

So use the cold weather as a motivator and not a deterrent. It’ll make all the difference…

Too funny but also true. Winter is a slow time of year to move but there is opportunity- like actually being able to reserve a rental truck on the day that you want it!

I like moving in the winter because I sweat a lot and the winter keeps me cool. I would die if I moved in the summer!

Hi Erick:  I can certainly understand those complaints.  But here's a strategy, find out how many people want to move to Florida to escape the winter since moving here in the winter is like your spring.  You get to sell their home and hopefully they come to my town (Orlando) and sell them a new home here.  Just a thought but doesn't work all the time.  Good luck through the long cold winter.  Come and visit us here in the south to thaw out a bit.

I can see how you never had any trouble getting girlfriends. .yes, people should embrace moving boxes in and all their heirloom quality furniture in the middle of a snow storm. .

Good thing you are in sales!  .

LOL

Good morning Eric, I can't say we hear those excuses in South Florida, usually they say it's raining...haha. Send them to Florida during the winter season and keep the house on the market. We have lots of winter rentals they can take advantage of.

Sorry, Erik . . .no amount of pizza and beer is going to entice me to help you move in the middle of a North Dakota winter. Been there, done that! I really think you should offer a moving service to load or unload that truck as a closing gift!
