December's Season of Celebration and Sharing - The 2011 Christmas Ship Parade - Sail the Columbia and Willamette Rivers

By
Industry Observer with Nature As Neighbors

The 2011 Christmas Ship Parade sets sail this month on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. The parade started out in 1954 as one lone sailboat, and The 2011 Christmas Ship Parade - Sails the Columbia and willamette Riversnow the fleet averages 55 to 60 ships (between both rivers) adorned with Christmas lights and decorations.

The ships sail every night beginning December 8 and ending December 20, 2011.
The parade begins at approximately 7 pm and lasts about two hours. The only thing that can cancel the parade is unsafe weather or water conditions.

The 2011 Christmas Ship Parade
has become a family tradition for many The 2011 Christmas Ship Parade - Sails the Columbia and willamette Riversboat owners, and the Skippers pay for their own decorations and fuel costs, for the enjoyment of all. As this is an all volunteer organization, not all ships make it out every night.

There are many places along the Portland-Vancouver Waterfront to view The 2011 Christmas Ship Parade, some inside and some outside. In fact, some restaurants and hotels along both rivers donate to the cause each year as a thank you for the boost in business.

The 2011 Christmas Ship Parade - Sails the Columbia and willamette RiversThe weather looks cooperative for the first few days of the parade, so you might want to call now to make reservations  at a waterfront restaurant. Naturally, you can also bundle up, fill the thermos with hot chocolate, and view the ships from an outdoor vantage point.

Debb: This is going to be so much fun.  Families can go just to see the boats/lights or can make a night of it and grab dinner while they wait for the parade to float by.

Debb,

Those are always fun.  Every city with a coast line is doing a boat parade.  I love seeing the creativity of the boat owners, one outdoes the other. A

Hey Joanie - nice to see you mile high city friend. I hear there's some snow on the ground - at least Kelsea reported some on Friday.

Lots of sun in our forecast - perfect for The Christmas Ship Parade. :)

Hi John, The sun's going to shine for the first part of it anyway - too early to tell how long the sun's going to last.

that sounds so wonderful, Debb!  When I was growing up in St. Petersburg FL we had the HMS Bounty docked at our Pier and it was so much fun to go down there during the Holidays.  This looks beautiful.  Do you plan on getting some footage? :)))

Debb,

A ship Holiday Parade.. Wow what a novel concept and frankly I personally would love to be able to see it. Both my step sons are into sailing and I am sure they would find this parade very interesting. Thanks for sharing this very cool event.

Debb, that's really cool! I've never heard of something like that. We have a river so we have some little river raft boats that carolers go on, and a parade, but nothing too fancy like yours. That's one of the nice things about AR, getting to see what's going on around the country. Have a nice evening.

Debb - now this is my kinda of Christmas event - sailing around on a yacht with Christmas lights. Our town has a small parade, but that's about it - lol. Hope you're enjoying the holiday season my friend! BTW - I think you've inspired so many people to change their AR backdrop since you wrote a post about it! Debb speaks, we listen!

Miss Deb~I've done this before with my husband's company paying for it as the venue for the annual employee Christmas party--TO DIE FOR! First off, being on the water, secondly, with that cold crisp air and chugging along in the dark seeing all of the boats decorated you can't HELP but get caught up in it. The only hard part is dealing with heels on the gangplank, but the attendants give a helping hand (literally). So long as you manage your intake of libation, you can navigate JUST FINE thank you very much!

Alexandra - yes they really get into it...when a skipper retires - he/she generally donates all decorations to a new cause. It's a great event.

Mim - I sure hope I get to see them - things are so busy right now and I'm trying to make sure I take some time to enjoy myself too - so, we'll see. :) ( I really do like the new profile pic - I'd pick you as my Realtor)

Bob - it does sound like an event tailor made for your fam.  Wish it was closer so you could enjoy the sights.

Richard - Happy Holidays to you. ( Holi-daze?) It sounds like the Yates are quite the social butterflies this week. It's a whirlwind time of the year, but so enjoyable too. How fun to visit a house you sold years ago - and I like that you are friends. That has happened to me a lot too -  I have several good friends that were previous clients. ( Shows we really do work with like-minded people). At any rate, you will have a wonderful evening I'm sure.

Make sure you keep the lamp shades on the lamps - and no dancing on tables.

Hi Cathy - yes it's a cool event for sure and one of our great local traditions. I'm hoping to see the entire parade this year...and not just glimpses from a passing car.

Hi Kristine - I just LOVE the new profile pic - it makes me smile. Yes, you would like sitting on a yacht and being part of this sailing parade - it can be quite magical. :) Not sure I inspired all the holiday backdrops.

Oh Gayle, I can see you balancing in those heels. :) :) I figured you would have seen this before - you should organize a "small Fishhawk Lake" version. Lighted canoes at dusk?? Why not?

Rebecca - ( Mrs. Claus) Really? I can't imagine not having a Christmas Ship Parade...isn't it fun to see all the local events from around the country?

Carla - Yep, you better get your post in...it starts Thursday! Not sure if I'm going yet...are you?
